Camera man nostalgia -- How far have you come? (anything take you back?)

I was just thinking about my very first professional camera being a DVX100. And how it would make that rattle sound inside it when it was off. Then you'd turn it on and that rattle sound would go away, but you knew that was just the way it was designed and everything was ok. The thought of that, just took me back. :Drogar-SunGlass(DBG

I've come a long, long way. I won't go back as far as Super 8 and 16mm (hobby shooting and college filmmaking class in the 70's), but I remember well my first "prosumer" camera- the Sony VX1000. Not progressive like the DVX, but otherwise a great, sharp image. I got my first freelance job and decided a "pro" would only expose manually (having never done it before). Needless to say, I botched the job. Finally in 2006 I got serious about video, bought the HVX (still have it) and started shooting hundreds of stock clips to learn the camera. Another large stock company (same one that handles footage of National Geo, Sony, etc.) saw the clips on the competitors site and recruited me to shoot for them.

Each time I pick up the HVX it takes me back to the day I first handled it. I shoot features with other cameras but shoot all everyday jobs with it. It also has the "clunk" but to me it's the sound of making money, with a camera that paid for itself a few months after I bought it, 7 years ago.

Sony Handicam on Digital8. $899 in 1999. My parents bought it when I was a freshman in high school and it disappeared... I logged hundreds of hours on that stupid handicam with no microphone or tripod or anything.

Made thousands off it, and built a huge client base. I used that camera, along with a free copy of Ulead Mediastudio Pro, with no accessories, until 2007 in my Junior year of college when I got an HVX200 and FCP 7.0. I think I made at least $50,000 on odd side jobs while I was a student with that thing! I guess that's proof that you don't need the best gear to make good videos.

I bought a canon xl2 because of the "looks" of it, and other people in front of it would go, that looks like a real "hollywood camera" omg!

Got me laid more than paid, know what i mean?
