Hi

I'm making promotion videoes for events/nightclubs and have an issue with the lighting. I do my shots with hvx200. I'm looking for an on-camera lightning to make shots of people dancing, sitting etc.

- What kind of lighting should I use in these kind of situations? (led?)
- Any recommandations? Where to buy?
- Any differenses between lights for outdoor and indoor use?

THANK YOU!

I've had good results with the Lite Panels Micro. It's LED on camera and runs off double A batteries (wise to get rechargeable) Although if your actually doing a promo video for the club don't be afraid to bring in a light. If the owner asked you to be there than he/she can't complain that your trying to get NICE shots for them!

My nightclub work usually involves covering celebrities who are paid to attend certain nightclubs. I shoot them sitting down, drinking or dancing in their little VIP corner. It's for marketing footage.

I use a little Frezzolini light and that's usually enough to light the subject. It has an adjustable potentiometer for various intensities. The club lighting usually takes care of the background.

If you're shooting clubs for showing the club itself, I can't help you. ;)

Most of my work is actually for nightclubs and event planners. MOST of the time I just rely on the club lighting. I talk to the club owners and tell them to adjust the club lights (the strobes and spinnning thingys and all that) to go off more or be brighter so I don't disrupt the atmosphere of the party.

Other times I've used a simple $20 sunpak light from Wolf Camera. It's a pretty bright light but only last 15 minutes....so use it sparingly.

I've thought about getting an LED, but the first option has generally never steered me wrong. See if you can find the lighting person and see if they can do something for you. Also, if you have lights of your own, you can try maybe setting up a few lights yourself throughout the club that fit into the scenary. I did that for the party promo video below:

Worked out great. It didn't disrupt the mood of the party. I came in early and had them rigged up a few 1k's pointed at the ceiling so nobody would bump into them (use mattelinis). It's a lot of work but the footage was beautiful. That option depends if you have time and a cool club promoter.

You can see some examples of just using club lighting below:

Thank you for lots of good tips!

I always communicate with the lightning person and the club owner to set up video-friendly lightning. Still there is always places that dont have enough lightning. In festivals and clubs I want to be able to walk outside the main floor for shooting people all around the place.

I think LED lightning on camera together with some own rigged up lightning sounds like a good solution. Anyone else that have experience with LED light on camera? Product recommendations?

Thank you all!!

I don't wanna be a wisecrack - but it's lighting, not lightning.
Lightning in a club (or anywhere near you) is deadly! ;)
