camera leash

has anyone made or used a leash for awkward situations at some altitude? obviously strapping the camera to yourself in an already dangerous situation offers yet another potential hazard, so i'm wondering if there is some kind of smarter carabiner, whereby it could be released even under tension (while a regular carabiner has to be able to be manipulated to the proper angle after being opened), but would not open otherwise.

that's a good point. that would make sense in a helicopter or a cherry picker. but running around a boat you'd want to be more mobile.

i guess not a lot of folks do this.

Plenty of people do that.

On a boat..I would use the same harnessing system as I would for myself. ie a 2 point system and it would be independent of my own 2 point system.

(2 point system means one is always attached while moving the other one.)

Obviously if conditions are a bit more benign...a single system would be fine.

I have had equipment go overboard from boats and glad I was not attached to them at the time. They were retrieved on their own lanyards.

thanks. long ago and far away i worked at sea for a number of years. i didn't have quite the attachment to cameras that has developed since. but you're absolutely right, i wasn't looking at the matter properly.
