I too have insurance on my gear (though probably not enough) through my renter's insurance policy (also through state farm). You can pretty much get anything on renter's insurance that you can through homeowner's.
What does it cover? I plan to get insurance in about a week or two but my fear is not just drops or damages. I am also afraid of my stuff getting swiped!
You have to be careful with homeowner riders. They CAN cover commercially used gear, but often if you make money with your equipment, they will refuse to pay when the time comes. And if you are shooting anywhere outside your home, you should really have production liability insurance as well. Cost can be about $300 a year for both, and you will be covered for commercially-used equipment as well as someone getting hurt during a shoot (light falls over and burns someone, someone trips on your wires, property gets damaged as a result of your movie crew, etc. )
Agree. as i understnad it homeowners policies will not cover commercial equipment - do not assume you are covered for a DVX just because you make little or no money with it - you will be hard pressed to prove that your $3,000 camera is just for home use.
