Is it really bad to play your footage through your camera?
If so, what is best to use to transfer your tapes over to your computer?

Thanks,

Patrick

Re: Camera Heads

It's not that it's bad, per se...

But for someone who is doing alot of capturing it will wear down your heads faster than neccasary. Some people have resorted to using a cheap 3CCD DV camcorder to do the actual capturing while the preferred method is a VTR Deck.

Re: Camera Heads

which is the preferred VTR among the DVX100 users?

Re: Camera Heads

Yeah, and what's considered a "cheap 3ccd" camera?

I've read in a lot of other posts in the Hardware section that if you get a relatively inexpensive camera to use for capturing, you get the advantage of a second camera. But heads is heads, I suppose. They all go bad sooner or later. VTR's are built for the singular purpose of editing, right?

Re: Camera Heads

Using a DVX100 to playback tapes for capture is not, as is implied, going to destroy the heads.

It's sad that people continue to spread this type of bull.

Use the camera for what it's designed for, and ignore the fear mongering that "some" seem to enjoy spreading.

It's just too pathetic that people here think that normal usage is going to destroy the DVX.

Re: Camera Heads

No one said it would destroy the DVX. But it does put additional wear on the heads and reduce their recordling life. Every minute of playback is a minute which might have been used for recording.

LOL......LOL....."additional wear on the heads and reduce their recording life"

Re: Camera Heads

Whether you're playing back or recording, you're putting the same wear on the heads. They will eventually wear out. You only have so many hours of head life. Why not use them all for recording? Why waste any of those hours playing back when any VTR/Mini-DV cam will do for that?

Re: Camera Heads

Considering the price of head replacement, I too, try to minimize unnecessary viewing of footage in camera. When I've got what I want, I rewind and capture. Period. I dont have to "be kind and rewind". ;D

Re: Camera Heads

My point is....this is not a toy camera, and as such, will not wear out at the rate people expect it to.

I keep seeing the "don't capture from your DVX", BUT, I've yet to find anyone on this forum, other forums I watch, other users I know, or anyone in my network of connections, who have actually needed the heads replaced due to excessive wear.

I quite understand the "concern", but not the "fear".

Re: Camera Heads

I've been watching these posts closely and If you bought the mack warranty with the DVX, wouldn't that cover replacing a new head if "excessive" use took place?

David?
Pookie?

It's YOU who says it's a "fear." No one else has.

Re: Camera Heads

It makes no sense to use the heads on the DVX for playback when any other camera will do. But not any other camera will record in 24p with cinegamma, etc..

That's all. It's sound advice. Don't elevate it into something it's not.
