Camera for Capturing

I just bought a used Panasonic GS19 from Best Buy to use for capturing footage.

Should I run a head cleaner through it before sticking my tapes into it?
 
Could I run into problems if the previous owner used a tape with a different coating?

The tapes I would capture from may be put back into my DVX to shoot with at a later date, and I wouldn't want to mess anything up.
