Have read quite a bit about the Kessler products. Are there any other good competing products in under $1,000 range for an EX1 (6 lbs)?

Also, when they say fixed focus capability, do they mean that I can lock on to an item, say a dinner plate, and camera will continue to show the dinner plate in the middle as it moves upward by 6 - 7 feet?

Are you referring to fixed angle mode? The fixed angle mode allows you to adjust your camera to a particular angle, and that angle is maintained through your crane move. If you have not already done so, you might find our dvd informative. You can view it online at http://dvd.kesslercrane.com.

On the DVD menu, if you go to the Instructional Videos, there is a video that explains the crane modes.
