Camera case question

How big/what style is your camera case?
Do you carry all of your extra lens in your case?
If not, how do you store your extra lens?

I am ordering the Canon XTi (for its small size) and would like to do a pelican case this time (instead of the soft). I have an 18m old and a 3 yr old child, so the camera would take less of a beating this way. My husband has a pelican case for his DVX and there is room for all of his stuff inside. However, he (krestofre) doesn't go out with both the kids, a camera, a bag, and such. I mean.. he doesn't travel when he is on location, just pops the camera out and puts in back in when he is done.

I am not sure if I want a case for all of my lens or one small enough to easily travel with. I often take my camera out with me to do intense walking at the Nature center or to the zoo. A zoom lens would be useful to switch out, but I could throw one in a backpack ;) to take with me.

Is the answer two cases :) ?

I eventually want a case for:
- my stock lens.
- a wide angle.
- a nice zoom.
- a fish tank lens (but I can leave this at home for the most part).

I have a couple of cases depending on the gig.

When I am going out on the town I just bring a walk around lens like an 18-200mm or just a simple 30mm f/2.0 in which case a lowepro bag works great (can hold camera, lens, & 1 extra plus filters and what not).

For event and weddings I bring my over the shoulder bag where I can fit 10+ lenses, 2 cameras, 2 flashes, tripod, and other misc tools.

Finally, for personal stuff I like my photo backpacker backpack from Osprey. It is comfortable, has room for one camera, 5 lenses (primes but one big zoom) and two flashes. It weighs only 4lbs, nice pads, but most importantly, room for misc crap (books and what not). This is what I normally travel with because I can put my gear in, have it be safe, and carry a book on the plane. It's really nice, but I think it is retailing for $275 right now (I have a buddy who works with REI).

The best advice is to have several because this is what protects your gear.

Plus it depends what you are doing... If you have a stock lens that is 18-55mm then you have a wide lens already and you just need a 70-200. So in that case a $20 lowepro at Wolf Camera / Ritz Camera will work great! It all depends.

I also need something where I can put my iPod because I carry my portfolio on my iPod and it has gotten me a ton of gigs when I'm just out shooting with nothing more than a camera, bag, iPod, and business cards!

You really need to have several bags to cover storage and different shooting situations. Unless you're a masochist, you won't want to tote around every single piece of gear you own every time you go out shooting.

Fast and Light: I use the ThinkTank Speed Demon. Maybe the best constructed bag I've ever used, the SD is perfect for a dSLR/zoom combination with room for a couple of extra small-medium lenses plus accessories. It can be worn over the shoulder or with the stow away waist belt. Very fast to use. $95

Backpack: I like the LowePro Mini-Trekker AW. This pack hold a lot so you can carry camera and other gear as necessary. Looks like a normal backpack, and easily customized. Like any backpack, a bit slower to use. $110

Sling-pack: Lowe-Pro Slingshot 100/200/300. These are currently all the rage because they combine large capacity with quick use. Available in three sizes.

Messenger Bag: Great protection and much cooler looking than most geeky cam bags. Also good for keeping a low profile. Check out the Crumpler 6 Million (or 5 Million) Dollar Home bags.

I have a KATA hb-207 back pack for my d200, 70-200 VR, 28-70 2.8 and 17-35 2.8. I also fit two SB-800's batteries and chargers. If I shift things around and lose a flash and maybe one lens, I can even squeeze my DVX in there. It also has a laptop sleeve. It is an awesome bag, but a little big and really heavy when loaded up. here is a picture with some of the stuff:
