Camera bag recommendations?

Hey, all. After having my DVX for about 3 weeks now, I'm starting to feel the need of a larger bag. It came with the Panasonic, which works well enough, but I could use some more space for accessories like filters and my Hoodman. I found this Varizoom bag on EVS (http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=VZB20) -- has anyone used it? I don't want to spend a fortune on a bag/case at this point. Just want something to fit the cam and accessories so I only have two bags to lug around (cam + tripod).

Thanks,

Fox

Re: Camera bag recommendations?

Hi Jason, that bag is very cool for the price, and has a decent rigid wall to protect the camera against accidents. It won't protect from someone hitting it with a mallet ;D, but it will do for an impact from a tipped lightstand. It comes with ditty bags, and is fairly unassuming for a camera bag. I just sold 15 of them to a major local studio as part of a 15 camera package purchase, and the folks using them are very happy. Also look at the Petrol PCCB-1N and PCCB-2N for around the same price.

Re: Camera bag recommendations?

Mickeloaf -- thanks for the link; bit too pricey at the moment (I still need an NTSC monitor and a Formac Studio or somesuch for editing; hate having to burn a DVD just to check color, etc.).

Rush -- thanks for the Petrols. What's you're personal preference between the VZ and the PCCB-2N? Also, thanks for hooking up my wife with 3046-3433 tripod/head, my mom with the AT897 and Porta-Brace rain slicker and my brother-in-law with the filters. It was a good Christmas for me! I'll be back in LA next week, but doubt I'll have time to swing by again. (I was the guy who came in a few weeks ago for tapes and asked about tripods; bought a Hoodman and some 6x9 overlays, too).

Thanks, all

Re: Camera bag recommendations?

Hi Fox,

I bought that Varizoom bag from Rush this spring and it has served me very well since then. Enough space, rigid construction and unobtrusive (doesn't shout "steal me" like
a Porta Brace would).
In the meantime I moved to a Porta Brace DV4 (ok, now my DVX might get stolen...)
and I use the Varizoom for my audio gear.

Re: Camera bag recommendations?

Joachim, thanks for the info. Sounds like that bag is the way to go for now. Later, I'll hire a sherpa.

Re: Camera bag recommendations?

what you guys think about pelican cases ? should a porta brace be better for the DVX ?

thanks,

Re: Camera bag recommendations?

I hear good things about the Pelican and Storm cases. Hard as nails and airtight.

I've got the Porta Brace DV Organizer that mickeloaf posted a link to. It's expensive, but it holds a lot of stuff and is made extremely well.

Re: Camera bag recommendations?

I have a pelican hard case with foam fitting my DVX and anamorphic. I hardly ever use. It's an excellent case if you want to transport your camera on a trip or long distance and are concerned about safety.

However, for local shoots, and quick run & gun scenarios, I really prefer a larger soft bag for conveniance, and the amount of material they hold. My DV Organizer holds my camera (strapped down in a nice protective sleeve), my cavision mattebox and rods, the anamorphic, cleaning kits, extra tapes, filters, batteries & charger, sound cables, shotgun mic and windscreen, with room to spare for white cards, and two soft puches for extra adapters, etc.

With a pelican, i would be forced to carry everything else in a seperate bag anyways, so just sticking with a larger cam bag saves me space.

Re: Camera bag recommendations?

I must say, that DV Organizer looks pretty sweet. Perhaps I should postpone my purchase. Or donate some plasma. Hmmmm.

Re: Camera bag recommendations?

Mike,

Can you fit the DVX with cavision mattebox installed in the Portabrace ?
I was thinking in the Petrol bag as well, not sure if portabrace quality is better.

Re: Camera bag recommendations?

Ulisses;

I usually take the mattebox off and place it in the bag sideways in the long partition. However, I just tried with everything assembled, and noticed that the Cavision 4x4 flag that folds down to cover the opening of the mattebox is 30CM wide, the width of the bag is 23. If you trimmed that plastic (has kind of a pyramid shape), or just took it off, then it would fit while attached to the DVX...

Re: Camera bag recommendations?

i have waaaay too many bags and i have yet to find a bag that will hold the dvx with the chrosziel installed.

i have all porta brace bags except for a kata maze 4 that i just got for the bulk of my lights.

i started with the porta brace cs-dv3 or 4 but then i quickly outgrew that and now i have two of the dv organizers and i'm upgrading one of the dv organizers to a production 3 bag.

i LOVE the storm cases, www.stormcase.com

i use a small stormcase for my filter collection to protect them.

Re: Camera bag recommendations?

Matthew,

I was thinking in the storm case for the DVX, do you preffer the DV organizer ? I like these solid cases, but looks like DV organizer is practical.

Thanks,
Ulisses
