i want to stop using my panny as a vtr... i have heard of people buying mini dv cams and using them instead. i purchased a panasonic pv-gs9 to try it out and there seems to be an issue with reading timecode and i am unable to mark in and out points to prepare for batch capture.

does anyone know of a minidv cam i can use for around 350 that will read the timecode off the tape recorded on the dvx100?

I can only say that all these cameras 'should' read your timecodes. Heck, it's justst 1s and 0s going by right?

I use a Pannasonic DV2000 and when that doesn't work, my tiny Sony TRV9 works with just about anything I can throw at it and it's over 3 yrs old.

With respect to the beauty of Pannasonic's DVX100s, there does seem to be an issue of timecode breaks. I am consistantly getting tapes with broken time codes scattered even in the middle of clips, not just at the breaks. I recommend to all my camerman to pre-record your tapes for timecode. This seems to be the only solution to battling the nature of the DVX.

Hope this helps

Hey Jeremy!

I've got an older Sony TRV20 and it works well with tapes shot on the DVX as well as the Sony PD170. No timecode problems or other errors. I've seen them sell for around $300-$400 on eBay from time to time. You're definitely better off not using your DVX as a deck since it wears the heads down fast!

Good luck!
Steve
