Camcorders

I have a Cannon Elura 100, and with proper lighting and a nice microphone, it gets high quality video. I don't understand, what's the different between that and a DVX? Why is the DVX so special that you need to spend that much besides to look professional?

Control over the image, form factor, ability to interface with professional add-ons, 24p.

And, of course, if the same scene is shot on a little handy-cam and a DVX, the DVX will blow it out of the water every time.

Better chips, better glass, better DSP. All of that money does go into making a better product.

Later this week I am going to do some testing of scene files on fully lit scenes, I am sure I can run my handy cam (Pany GS200) alongside for you to see if you would like.

24p, Gamma, and I can manual zoom (really really fast).

Oh and the Leica Lens, 3CCD's, Huge LCD and EVF, XLR Audio, Heavy, Manual Everything!

And it looks fu(kin dope.

As someone who stepped up from a consumer-level camera to the DVX, the first time you capture DVX footage and throw it on your timeline, it's just incredibly more detailed and rich. You have to see it to believe it... but you're right, you can get a long way with consumer equipment if you know what you're doing, and no one should look down on that.

I have one more question, I don't think it deserves a new thread though. What types of scenes do you think I can get away with with a consumer camera with decent quality, and what kinds of scenes would I deffinately have you use a DVX/Any professional camera?

I don't quite understand what you mean by that question, but if i had to take a gander, i'd say that consumer cameras should only be restricted to shooting under the best of situations: ie those with proper ,controlled lighting so that you won't be affected by the noise which most often plagues these cameras. However I think that if you'd spent enough time and effort to light your scene properly and you have a DVX, you'd definitely use thtat to take advantage of it.

This doesn't mean however that the prosumer cams can make less than favourable situations look good - they just make it look less ugly than if you would use a consumer cam.

Chronic,

I shot about twenty different projects (shorts and music videos) with a Pana GS400, every genre and style of short you can imagine, did 24p conversion in post, and won a number of cinematograhy awards (and others, many times in competition with DVX and other cams). You can do a lot with a great consumer camera. It's more about the skill and artistry you bring to the table. I can't think of anything you can't or shouldn't do with a consumer camera... just that you'll get a big technical quality boost when you jump up to a DVX.

you really cant see the difference on a TV screen you need to look at it on a production monitor.

Also with any degree of aggresive color correction the Elura 100's picture will fall apart. the DVX footage will hold up worlds better. Also, the Dynamic range, highlight handling, and lowlight capabilities are without comparison.

well there's one thing you really can't do with little consumer camera, and that is making decent money. hell, you can turn over six figures a year with a prosumer setup, good luck making any dough with a one chipper.

I have made very decent money for the last two years with a single chip Canon Optra 20. It has finaly died on me and I am looking at replacing it with a DVX100.

Actually dont buy a DVX, save a bit more, and get an HVX. this way you can "go HD" in the future. why buy another camera later when you can have one that can go HD at anytime.

i guess it depends on what you consider 'decent money' I know if I was paying a guy 500 bucks a day and he showed up with a one chipper I would be super pissed.

Now that is the difference. I do not work for anyone else. For my work content is king. No one has ever asked what type of gear I use. Moving up to a better camera will not increase my sales. I am buying the DVX because I want to play with some short ideas. That and I need the deduction for 06.

Make the most of the gear that you have.

THe HVX looks like a great camera. I am sure it will do what you need it to do.

Well what do you do exactly?
