Guys, I just found a free model I wanted to experiment with, problem is its in Maya 4 format, I need to load it into max.

So please can a maya user download this model and convert to a .obj format (with textures) so that I can experiment with it.

Thanks in advanced.

P.S for those who want to know why this particluar model it of interest to me. It is becuase the guy has clearly used a photomodeleling method to make the model, I know of a program that allows you take photos of any object from different angles, the program then makes the model WITH the photo textures applied.

My theory was that I could "3d scan" a human and then animate them, I wanted to see how realistic the end result would be. I think it would work for distant shots and MAYBE even medium shots, create use of CG "extras"

Maybe you could download a Maya trial version and use that to convert the file.

I don't know if C4D can open it, in order to convert it, and I really don't want to become a member at TS. If you could post the file on FreeDrive.com I could download it and see if C4D can change it then send it back. Just an idea.

Or I'm sure a maya user will respond soon.

Did you get it to work? I'd love to make a 3D scan of myself or even my dog, what's the program?

It loaded ok, but had alot of mesh problems (normals) so after a lot of cleaning up, and some that I couldn;t clean up (look at the face) I slapped on a rig and then some mocap and heres the result:

The weights need to be adjusted for proper deformations, but for test purpose it not too bad, would work really well for distant shots as digital extras

Wow not bad at all!! You know now that I think about it, I saw a guy use a laser pen as a DIY 3D scanner before. It worked, but the image was kind of ugly, but hey it worked.

I'm thinking about using a whole SWAT team in the background, and because they will be wearing gas masks you don't have to worry about facial expressions :)

Now I'm trying to figure out how to merge it with live action in a believable way, more tests comming soon...

you dont need to use the laser thingy, wait let me get the link to the software I'm talking about:

All you do is take something like 13 (or more) pictures and it builds the model with the photo textures applied.

:)), and just thing, dress you actors up in the gear you want for your "Digital Extras" and then bam! wack a rig and animate

hey I can convert it to fbx, on Monday!

anyway what is the name of this program:

?

3dsom, see the above link,

surf, see what kind of stuff you can get out of this model, your animation skills is propably much better than mine!

Thanks guys!
yea mocap is fun sadly its way to expensive and out of reach of indi filmmakers :( I've looked into many systems but they are always expensive.

I did find some free software, but they require that a user manualy "track" the dots.

I've just realised that doing this route, there is not much that is actually synthetic, because the motion is real, the textures is real, the geometery is real :)

anyways I need to go do more tests...

thanks the link, i had just posted my reply when I recognised the link.

anyway, I am not a great animator :D

and yes, mocap is really not a cheap thing, you need at least 2 cameras, although I have read an artical for a few weeks on fxguide.com about a new techonlogy which is much cheaper and faster than the others. it uses 10 b&w cameras, but it does not need dots!
