Callback etiquette

We are done with casting calls, and are getting read to do callbacks.

This is new to us, so we don't know the proper protocol to follow.

The majority of the roles we have one person we are "sure of", and do not need to see them read again. We have one role where we had some "iffy's" that we want to see read again. How do we handle call backs for those who we want for the part, and those who we want to read again?

During the callbacks you should get the actors you want and the iffys together with the rest of the cast in an important scene. Mix and match to see how they work together and make up your mind. Just bring them into the audition room a couple at a time. Have the rest in the holding area.

Callbacks can reveal issues with the actors you think you're 'sure of' as well. Use it as insurance against a mistake. See how they take direction, give them some challenges, etc. Some actors who seem right initially turn out not to be.

Trust me...

Some actors can do great once but you need to see if they repeat it.

If you don't want to do all the pairing up, make sure to bring back those you think are for sure, and see if they are consistent in their delivery (echoing Ted).

With the 'iffys' you should bring them back and give them more direction to see if they can alter their portrayal to suit what you visualize. An 'iffy' who can take direction will work out better on set than a 'for sure' who does not follow re-direct.

Remember, time on set is precious!

I'd add, always have a backup, you never know if an actor will get a last second job or some issue will come up. Bring in your for-sures, but also bring in your second choice. You never know on a callback if your second choice all of a sudden shows you something you had not seen before. It will also help you from getting screwed over if a last second conflict arises with one of your actors.
