California: The State Run By Morons

Hi all:

THis morning was the last straw and I need to vent. I just picked up the local paper and saw that they are closing a company located just down the street, Zebra Technologies. Zebra manufacturers and engineers bar code equipment and have been here in the city I live in for quite a few years. They are firing all of their manufacturing people and moving operations to China. 300 local families will not have a mom or dad employed.

I don't blame the management of Zebra at all, any of us would have done the same thing to remain competitive and to stay in business. I blame the morons who run the state of California. It all trickles down to a local level but it all begins with the Boxers and Feinsteins of the world. Raise taxes, raise taxes, increase regulations, audit, sick CAL/OSHA repeatedly on businesses that have already proven compliant, let the surrounding infratructure crumble, increase traffic, incerase cost of living, make housing unaffordable through a combination of taxes, regulation and building moratoriums. Who would be naive enough to try to keep their manufacturing in California? This is so sad, it will affect a lot of local families whose kids go to school with mine. We have already sold our souls in this state, sold off our resources, off shored our manufacturing and engineering and mortgaged our future. Keep in mind that this company is located about four blocks from Technicolor, who also basically shut down two years ago and moved all manufacturing to Mexico, think that they laid off around 800-900 people here. Can't blame them, blame the idiots who have made California one of the least desirable places to do business in our entire country.

My wife is a middle school teacher. Due to our little school district having to make $5 million dollars in budget cuts, she just received her pink slip, along with 50 other teachers in our tiny school district. She loves teaching and has improved the lives and knowledge of thousands of students over the course of her teaching career. She is really good at what she does but because she only has five years of tenure in her district, she is losing her job. Of course, we are near LA, where around 3,000 employees of the LA Unified School District are losing their jobs as we speak, with another 2,500 queing up to be next on the chopping block. So let me get this straight, because the imbeciles up in Sacramento have run our budget and economy into the ground, now we should make massive cuts in education? That is going to do wonders for our future here, isn't it? I heard on NPR this week that California just discovered an extra $480 million dollars in their coffers that they didn't even know that they had. I wonder what stupidity they will waste this found money on instead of retaining teachers and putting it back onto the education system? When your state is $35 billion in the red, I guess it doesn't matter much.

I am sure many on this board can relate to the way that production has left California. If I were producing a feature or narrative series, I would too. Why not go to New Mexico or Louisiana? Great production infrastructure, huge tax rebates and generous, open arms from the state governments and film boards. Why stay in California to shoot when basically everyone tied to the state, film commissions and just the local citizenry want to rape you and hold you hostage? I have been on the sets of numerous features and tv shows that have attempted to shoot in SoCal and generally, it is an expensive pain, filled with red tape, extortion and cost overruns. So those of us who work in the support end of the film and television industry are also affected when California basically chases productions from filming here.

I am just so fed up with this state. Unlike most people, I am a native Californian, so I have spent my entire life here. To see how far this place has fallen, how broken and corrupt it is and where it is headed really pains me to no end. The leadership of this state has been and currently are greedy, shortsighted and corrupt. It is so sad.

Wow, I can understand your plight as a fellow Southern Californian.

Several years ago, I worked for a web development company and not even 6 months working there, they decide to move their operations to Texas.

My mother used to be an accountant in Beverly Hills for a well known music publisher and they jumped ship years ago too.

Plus rent prices here SUCK!

I imagine that this thread will get closed at some time. But before it does I just wanted to say that I empathize. I love Colorado, but there are some really stupid laws here (anyone remember Amendment 2? That not only was unconstitutional, but cost us um hundreds of millions of dollars).

I am currently involved in an initiative called FLTI (Family Leadership Training Institute), which is a non-partisan civics initiative that teaches people how to be effective in enacting change at a local and state level. We talk about how state and municipal governments work, how to partner with legislators, how to access community services, how to get your agenda taken seriously, how to use the media, how to have effective discussions around difficult topics (race, prejudice, differing POV's), etc.

It originated in Connecticut and has started to spread. It's a pretty amazing experience. We had pilot programs in 2 counties last year and are doing 5 at the moment. I have already seen some of the participants make some amazing changes at the local level.

Looks like I got out just in time...Unfortunately, since Canada has done so relatively well in the global recession, my US money is worth less and less every day.

I can relate to your frustration my friend, similar things are happening here in Illinois. Our leaders are so far removed from the lives of everyday citizens it's shameful. They no longer relate to what the people are experiencing right now.

WA isn't too far behind CA. If not for Microsoft and Boeing's commercial division being so firmly entrenched here, we'd be screwed.

Is it really that difficult to understand the "no politics" rule?

We have posters in this thread with 16,197 posts, 973 posts, 3,824 posts, 5479 posts, and 4446 posts.

You all know we have a no politics rule. So knock it off.
