California budget help

this is a question for people in california-

I'll be out there very soon- moving in september but I have two job interviews so if I get a job early i'll be out sooner. I was out to visit about 4 months ago and checked out some apartments. I want to live in a nicer area- something like woodland hills or thousand oaks. When I was out there- the only real price difference i noticed from the east coast is the housing. It seems to be about double-ish what it here here near philadelphia. I'm going to Columbia in tarzana for film and I'll be working fulltime during the day (network engineer.) what do you guys pay to live out there per month if you dont mind me asking? just trying to get a budget together. thanks gents

i'm in san diego...so i'm not sure what the difference is price-wise, but...

I moved here 3 years ago, got a 1 bdrm walking distance to SDSU. $910/month

Now I'm in a 4 bdrm large house in La Mesa up in the hills, nice area, 10 minute drive to SDSU. $2200/month

I think I got ripped off on my first place, and now I'm getting a great deal. I looked long and hard everyday to find a good deal, which can be hard to find if you don't already live here. Good luck

yeah, I had to buy a fridge too.

again, craigslist that for sure, my friend got a sweet stainless steel fridge, brand new, $300.

i've had a one bedroom right off the melrose shopping district near cbs for quite a while now. great location - $1600/ month. and it came with a fridge. i can afford better now, but i'm not moving until i buy a house.

600 a month in a brand new house in Orange County.

850 a month in an apartment in Santa Monica just around the corner from Ocean park Blvd.

Don't try to live alone if you're not ultra bank. And don't expect the apartments to look anything like east coast housing... I miss my space. Everyone lives on top of each other in Southern California. I remember the days I rented an apartment with friends, and paid 350 (with utilities) for my own 13x13 in Kennesaw... what a beautiful place. =(

I moved here from GA with 1600 dollars, almost a year ago it was.

wow- i pay 535 a month right now for a big one bedroom apartment. I was looking at one in woodland hills for around 1200, and it was nice. I think that i have to figure on at least 1100 a month for a semi-decent one. thanks guys! any more input? is car insurance nasty? I pay about 220 a month right now- 9 months of payments a year

You need to factor in transporation too these days. You might want to live close to work and school or at least one of them. What's gas today guys? Gotta be around $3.15 by now. Hope you have a car. Registration, Insurance is mandatory too, don't forget.

wtf is this?

all these rates in southern california..all mostly under $1000?

Some of those rates are about what I'm paying here in michigan...I thought california was suppose to be expensive.

I was expecting $1200/month at LEAST for maybe a two bedroom whatever.

Oh, we're not discussing the prime real estate. Just the livable parts. How bout the 2 bedroom condo that sold across the street from me for like 650K.
