calibrating your monitor

I use a standard consumer emerson color tv with s-video for my monitor. I've read that you have to calibrate your monitor in order to get the same results for your print as your preview. Does anybody know how to do this? In vegas, under preferences, preview device, and under the color managment checkbox, you can chose a number of different monitor color profiles. How do I know which one to choose?

If you're starting out and doing work for television SD resolution (not computer or print work), I recommend you do the following:
A- Hook up your TV to your DV device/camcorder to firewire to your computer. In Vegas, use the (output preview) function in Video preview.
This will show you things that don't necessarily show up on a computer monitor.
-interlace flicker
-field order issues
-if you use RCA instead, you will see chroma crawl
-overscan - sort of like cropping

What you won't get is color accuracy. Traditionally the way to get color accuracy would be to get a broadcast-grade monitor with SMPTE C phosphors (these may be difficult to purchase now, and cost about $1500-$2000). There are solutions for even better color accuracy, at higher price tags.

The ICC profiles are designed for color accuracy for PRINT work, not video. And I believe they will only work if using Windows secondary display instead of DV/firewire/IEEE1394 out. With Windows secondary display (a computer monitor), you won't be able to spot the issues above. When you're starting out, you'll run into those issues more than you run into issues with color accuracy.

I tried TV to your DV device to preview and it worked. My question is if there is a way to hear audio from your tv rather then your computer (i have a HP and the sound card is very misleading vs what i get when played on TV). Right now all i get is picture from the TV. I did Preview divice/OHCI 1399 DV/ through my camcorder. Any reply's would be helpful.

No audio to the TV. However, in the Preferences, you can change the sound sync to match what you're seeing on your TV.

Thank you for the suggestion David Jimerson. I tried looking in my preferences but could not find away to sound sync what i am seeing on tv. Is it under preferences/audio (i tried different defaults but it did not work).
