Calibrating HD Monitor for HVX200

I'm using a Samsung LCD HD monitor to edit with. I want to calibrate this monitor. I can send it bars from Final Cut Pro via Kona LH video card -- HD component). This is not a pro monitor. You can't put it in blue only mode, but are there little tips or tricks to making it look as accurate as possible (best settings for Contrast, brightness, sharpness, color, tint and color tone)? Each setting goes from zero to 100. Perhaps I should send something other than color bars for closer calibration? This may help those of us who can't afford a real (pro) HD monitor.

This info would also help us in setting up LCD monitors in the field with the HVX200.

Also, many of these monitors have presets (like movie, standard and dynamic). Movie seems to bring down the blacks and warm the overall tone - like adding a bit of orange to everything. Dynamic seems to raise the contrast and crank up the colors. Standard seems to be more neutral.

Should I go with standard or do my own custom settings? Would putting all of the settings at 50% work, or is that a bad idea (that might not be enough contrast)? I thought that the beauty of HD (vs SD) was that HD images would have less monitoring variables, but I can still screw up a HD image just as easy (joke)!

I assume that the lack of response to this thread has to do with the fact that using a non pro monitor is a guessing game at best.

I have a calibration DVD (for home theater) that had a blue gel included...
You look through the gel and make your calibrations for monitors that don't have the blue only setting.

It is an older DVD - 5 or 6 years - but maybe you can still find something similar.

That's an interesting idea. Would it work? It sounds like a very low tech solution. If it worked like a pro monitor, it would help set up chroma and hue. Brightness could be set up by eye. I'm not sure how I would set up contrast. How does this blue gel elimintae the other colors from the colorbars? Could I just unplug the other colors using the component hd out of the editing system (leaving B in and removing R and G)? That's another crazy low tech idea that I have no idea if it would work or not!
