Calibrating External TV

I can't afford a pro video monitor to preview my projects, so I bought a little TV at the evil walmart, just wanted to know what the best way to calibrate is? Do I use the color bars from Vegas, or would it be better to use the color bars from my DVX?

The tv's got basic contrast, color, tint, sharpness control, so hopefully it will work for now.

Also, is there a way to preview widescreen projects correctly on this tv?

This forum has helped a bunch with everything I've been trying to do, thanks in advance for all your help!

I'd use Vegas' bars. But it shouldn't really matter.

As for the widescreen part...maybe set the project as 4:3 so it letterboxes on the tv, then set it back to widescreen when finalizing the project. I think that would work...

if you are playing back from your DVX then you use color bars from DVX ..

if you are viewing from Vegas time line then you use Vegas color bars ..

Setup brightness and contrast with the following instructions:

*The blue gel trick doesn't work. There is a better trick where you use an alternate test pattern with flashing bars... but even that doesn't work too well sometimes.
You may be better off eyeballing hue and chroma by eyeballing it.

You could preview things letterboxed. If all your media have widescreen aspect ratio, then you can change your project settings to standard 4:3. Vegas should letterbox everything then.
