I agree, it's an amazing film. I think that many have discarded it because it doesn't fit the formula of a film that we're used to seeing. I think the length of the scenes, which many criticize as too long, was a useful tool implemented masterfully. The lack of mood music was an enhancer in my opinion. Without musical cues, I found myself paying intense attention to each scene, far more than usual. If you were someone who didn't like this film on your first viewing, I would challenge you to screen it again.Draccan said:Wow, I am surprised about the hate for this movie. When I saw it I thought it was one of the best films ever made...It is sad so few likes a film like this that has so much to offer, thinking out of the box, so much to teach us. If only we care to pay attention..
I interpreted this scene differently. It seems that what he's doing is taking a sleeping pill and turning his back on the problem, on his past, trying to shut it out. He never really faces it at all; instead he kind of lucks out when Majid kills himself. All that's left to remind him is Majid's son, who he bruskly waves off. This paralells the French covering up/ignoring their conflict with the Algerians.I like for example the scene in the bedroom where the husband goes to bed, the frailty of that scene, the loneliness and guilt portrayed without words or music, muted down but vividly visible.
