Cable question

I have a generic Radio Shack XLR cable. Will I notice improvement in sound quality if I bought something more expensive from BH? What brand would you suggest for the 20-25 foot range?

When I mount the mic on the DVX, is there a 1-3 foot cord that I could use? 25 feet of cable is a little cumbersome for that application.

Thanks

sbryan,
I'm not familar with Radio Shack cables but I would guess they are adequate but not great. For the equipment you are using (mic->DVX), I seriously doubt you would notice any significant improvement in sound quality by simply using a higher-quality cable. Is there a problem with the sound quality you are getting now? You do know that a camera-mounted mic is typically one of the worst ways to capture your audio?

There are other reasons to buy a good quality cable. Features that come to mind are quality connectors, proper shielding, durable solder joints, proper strain relief, and a manageable cable. While I think it's worth paying more for a quality cable, I don't think you have to buy the most expensive to get it.

If on-camera is your only choice, this cable has worked well for me:

I'll probably only use a camera mounted mic for ambient sound. I'll have somebody work the boom the rest of the time.
