C4D Framerates

Doing some composites in C4D, shooting at 23.98 and 29.97 fps. However, Cinema 4D render settings only allow 24 or 30 fps. Is this an issue or is C4D just lying about its framerates?

Thanks Josh, maybe you can help me with a problem I'm having with 11.5.

When trying to render out a background with a material texture from a h264 .mov it renders fine in the timeline, but when I finally go to render the final comp it will only render 1 or 2 frames before it gives me a texture error. This doesn't seem to be a problem in 11 with the same footage. Am I missing something in the update?

And back to the frame-rate question, in the render settings, I try to manually adjust it to the exact fps but it auto-rounds it. Is this normal too? Sorry, just starting to learn this program. Thanks for your advice and time.

Oh, and if it helps at all diagnose my problems. I'm using cheap-o PfHoe, not even the Pro version. Dunno though, might just switch to Syntheyes.

Like Josh said, it might be easier to convert it in post first.

I use R10.1 so I render out my footage as an image sequence from my NLE first and use those in C4D.
I render out image sequences from C4D also then convert everything to 23.97 back in the NLE at composite time.

It really uncomplicates everything like having to deal with codec issues and the search time involved with having your 3D program unravel the compression to find the right frame. And in some cases, some programs would crash while trying to read uncompressed avi's.

Importing image sequences for me has always worked without a problem.

Thanks Gord.T, I gave it a go but C4D doesn't want to calculate the frames in the background texture, end up with 1 frame throughout.. this might be something I should just look up in the manual. Thanks again.

It's a bit hard to explain.

You import the sequence like you would normally import a picture.

Texture-Load Image->...

Select one of the files. It'll ask "This image is not in the document search path. Do you want to create a copy at the current location?"
Say 'no'. It'll find the path. Bear with me.

Create a background object (Main menu->Objects->Scene->Background) and drag the material onto the object. You should see it now in the viewport.

-dbl-click the material in the material manager to open the material properties.
-select the color channel.
-left click on the thumbnail image to open another properties page.
You should now see tabs for 'Basic' 'Shader' and 'Animation'
-Click the 'Animation tab'
-Under the 'Timing' list, select 'Exact Frame'
-Hit the 'Calculate' Button.

Now this assumes you have previously set your frame rate to 24 fps...
-main menu->Project Settings->Frame Rate = '24'

But also while in your animation tab previously, you'll see a 'Movie Frame Rate' text with a box to the right of it. Just set that to 24 fps also, then hit 'Calculate'.
It should show the animation length in the 'Movie End Frame' box.

If that's okay and you still can't see it in your viewport, or it does not animate in your viewport, select the 'illumination' tab of the material (dbl click the material first to open it, ect) and 'check' the box 'animate preview'. Sometimes you have to do that.

Thanks guys! Image sequences worked great in 11.5, seems unfortunate that .movs don't anymore. Wonder why. When I'm done with the video, I'll post IT in this thread, should be by the end of the week, mainly just an excuse to learn the program in my free time. Thanks again!

PS: Does Syntheyes rock PFHoes socks off? Because PFHoe is really hit and miss with tracks and it's getting annoying.

Yes, SynthEyes does rock PFhoe's socks off but I've heard PFtrack is excellent.

SynthEyes starts around $399.99 which is a steal for a professional tracking application.

Thanks for all the tips fellas.

..one more question ;)

To align a 3D object to tracking points imported from PFHoe (polygon objects (Auto_1,Auto_3,Auto_3,etc..), is it as simple as using the "Align to Spline," Or "Align to Object" Tag? Doesn't seem to be working for me.. Should it?

R10 doesn't have an align to object tag but here's a few other ways.

1/ place your object as a child of the tracking null that you want to follow.
Then select 'menu->Structure->Axis Center->Center to Parent' just to get it in the ball park then you can move it where you want it. It'll follow the parent.

2/Another is to use a constraint tag if you have the character module. Check mark the 'Position' box in the PSR tab.

3/You could also use expresso if your familiar with it.
