Bypass rendering?

I know I'm probably being stupid and missing something obvious, but how can I playback my effects and audio without rendering? Like a preview mode or something.

OK, I found "Unlimited RT" that solves my video problem. But if i lay down audio in the timeline and it has a "red status" (needs render), isn't there a way I can listen to it without rendering???

It's very annoying.

YOu can go into the RT menu on the upper left of the timeline and choose PLAY BASE LAYER ONLY. If you want to see what the effect looks like before you render, press OPTION-P and the timeline will advance as fast as it can... it will be slow, but you can see the effect in action.

Yeah, I guess there is no way to playback that audio without rendering first. Hmm, too bad. I know Premiere can do this.

You can also change the number of real time audio tracks in user prefs... so if that is what is causing the need for a render, and your machine can handle it, up the number.

What?

Are you saying there is no way to hear the EQ changes or reverb with out rendering the audio effects?

if your audio matches your sequence settings, then you shouldn't have a problem. you should be able to run basic effects like reverb and eq without rendering.

to the OP, what format is your audio? are there filters applied to it?

As bigbossbmb mentioned, convert it to an AIFF or WAV at 16bit/48k and it won't have to render anymore.

If I'm going to convert all my sound effects, why not just render them?

The point is I can't just import, throw on the timeline and preview. Just annoying is all. And I could've sworn FCP didn't have this problem.

Converting them once sounds like a lot less of a PITA then always having to render them. You can use iTunes to Compressor to do a batch conversion that'll take no time at all.

FCP has never played well w/MP3s.

FCP is a good program but depending on your needs Premiere Pro may work best. If you have a lot of MP3s or need Blue Ray Premiere Pro may out shine FCP. If you are doing a feature film maybe FCP would out shine PP CS3.
