low priced?

Edit: Ah, I see 700 Euros.

Sounds good. Would love to see it in action. Do you have a promotion video?

Vladimir, I remember on cinema5d you provided some details about construction.

As I understand you make very smart decisions using ready digital servo + controller that can be driven directly using variable resistor.
So, is it possible to make DIY kit?

Thanks.
I had some strange idea about using simple handle to hold rig and second rod to touch.
Based on touch position you get different resistance.
You can also measure capacitance of second rod, in this case conductor handle is not required.

Current round FF are not very good suitable for one man run and gun situations.
We need something near the rig handle.
Simple solution could be good fader.

variZoom like controls are not very useful for focus control, especially on handheld rig.
I am talking about linear variable resistor - fader. Made by ALPS, for example.

Hi Frank!

RedRock is great. And the motor that shown on 1,25 is based on expensive components. We did contact number of great suppliers and came to conclusion that "classic", say Hedens motor architecture, does not fit to our low priced target: This system usually has motor-planetary gear-right angle bevel-encoder-hub-driving gear construction.
Since the torque with the low speed suppose to be high, the DC-motor must be as fast as possible. Planetary gear will reduce speed and multiply driving gears torque. High speed system must be of very high tolerance, made of best materials = expansive. BTW, housing too.
That is the price for low noise high torque and long life.

"If" is really economy system, for its transmission is simple. And must make its job good. The only thing makes me look for other solution is overloaded bayonet and focusing ring. The marking disk idea doesn´t work here as it does with geared systems, because the belt can slide against the lens. It will be not that easy to come back to original marks with number the lens shifts i fear.

There are other layouts:
Worm geared motor - good, powerfull, self-fixed, quiet, but it need lubrication, and has low efficiency.
Use of stepper and hybrid motors is great solution to make one-gear-transmission, but they are noisy.
Just Yesterday we tested one of them: in the most "silent" mode it did cover Big Brother Heden like a bull cowers the sheep.

My conclusion is: use nosy RC car servo or nosy stepper or hybrid like Nema 28 for low priced system.
for the "middle class" DC gearmotors with the axis parallel to the optic ax ix, earlyer Heden etc., will be the best.
RT Motion is good example.

Cheers

Thanks for the write up Vladi, I just posted those clips because Vitaliy was asking about controls closer to the handle, not because of motors or anything else.
The Redrock solution with that little wheel is pretty nifty, the Intuit is nice too, but I doubt that you can do exact and reproducible focus pulling on those controls.
It´s more for run & gun one-man-show work.

I do mostly narrative and therefore have a AC1/focus puller that does the job.
That´s why I´find your unit more interesting.

If you want me to, I would be happy to review it on my blog.

Cheers for the mention, Vlad, and good to see your progress!

Just a tiny correction, we're not using a DC motor!

I think Your new system is great. First of all in 1200£ price range appeared continous rotation motor system. On top of it: RT Motion can control 3 motors. It is the new breakthrough sinсe Pete surprised low-budget filmmakers with Ho-Fo.

I do not dare to vocalize another suggestion on motor, but to say: our Nema-hybrid tests went not that good and the next motor prototype we thinking over is BLDC.

:o) Vladi

Could be helpful in some situations, but I doubt that you can pull precise focus with a scooter handle.

Postmaster , EXCELLENT Review buddy!! Ive been eyeing this follow focus for a while now. Thats good to hear they are coming out with a quieter motor and wireless. I think i will opt for that version which is not much more but beneficial. Does anyone know how much the redrock micro remote follow focus setup will be going for? im sure that setup wont be cheap.

love the picture with you and the cigarette in your mouth.
