Did any of our European members attend BVE? If so, please let us know what you saw. I'd like to hear some first hand impressions on the Panasonic PX-270 and the GH4, and the JVC HM850.

Saw the JVC HM850, but not in a way as to draw any quality judgements from. Obvious point is that JVC have (I'm very pleased to say) gone back to their lightweight shouldermount ergonomics. As such, the selling point is that it's a fairly lightweight camera (lightweight enough to, say, be held above the head in a crowd) but still have good ergonomics in normal use. To me, that's a strong plus over the other cameras in the class - PMW200, HPX-270, XF305.

Perhaps slightly strangely, it has a good variety of in-built codecs, including a 50Mbs one - but that seems to be H264 and mp4 I believe? May give good quality, but seems a shame it's missing XDCAM 422 from a compatability point of view? Might be to do with file formats on SDHC cards? But I'd say ergonomics and codec flexibility are it's strongest points.

Didn't see the GH4, but did see the Sony RX10 for the first time for real. Again, no way to draw quality judgements, but was very impressed by size, weight, build quality, menu options etc if you want a camera in this price/class. Would want to check out the GH4 before making any purchase though.

Lost track of how many times I saw "4K" on advertising banners etc from many manufacturers, and one of the theatres was dedicated to just that - and very impressive some of the demos were too. (Though I'd have been interested to see the same material in 2K as a side by side.)

It could be worth dropping this guy a line http://www.hdwarrior.co.uk/ He's a nice bloke and probably will give you his thoughts on 3 cams you mention. Be warned, he's a JVC fan so he'll give it better press than it probably deserves in terms of image quailty, though I agree with hardrive that the ergonomics are excellent, why Canon and Sony can't think like this is beyond me!

I'm a regular reader of Philip Johnston's HD Warrior website. He just sold his Canon C300. I don't know what he replaced it with. He goes through cameras, it seems like a new one each year.

He's a gear freak and no mistake! I bought a video card from him a couple of years ago and it still works beautifully, but he HAD to have the newest version!

Excellent video. Is Phillip Johnson the JVC fan? I ask as I've always wondered what a JVC fan looks like.

The F5 is a beast, I always thought it looked like a crap plastic box on the images on-line, but it's the business, I want one.

So I am a JVC fan...Tom ?...I am a fan of cameras fit for purpose and prefer to keep up to date with technology.

Fair comment Philip, I'd never deride you for having great gear - mainly I'm just jealous that you get to play with it all :)
