Buying used Equipment

Hey Guys,

I am looking at buying some used gear, wanted to see if you know any good places other than Craigslist or Ebay. I am looking for a 4 channel mixer and mic if I can squeeze it in. I have close to 2k to spend, so far I am looking at a Wendt X5 mixer...haven't decided on a mic yet...any combo suggestions I would love to hear.

Thanks

I'm not a big fan of the Wendt mixers. They are pretty noisy. Most of the main audio dealers have used equipment for sale. Check out Coffey, Trew, LSC, DV eStore, Gotham, PSS...they should all have consignment sections.

Thanks Dave....I haven't heard much about Wendt, that's one of the reasons i brought it up. Thanks for the advice!

What kind of jobs do you mostly do? The marketplace here might have something for you and from what I've seen there's usually pretty good deals. I can't see your location but in Canada I use Kijiji. Buying used is the only way ill go. Cheers.

The old Wendt mixers, Noisy? yes, but like the original (3 channel) Shure FP32, the pre-amps have that real nice sound. In most ENG-type situations the mixer's noise is not the problem.. if everything else is right and gain-staged correctly. If you're always gonna be in ultra-quiet environment.. and have the budget.. SD is arguably the best of both worlds.. 'the sound' and low noise.

Thanks Mitch...I mostly do ENG style work...commercials...short films...Looking to build a kit that can that I can use on a regular basis and eventually to work on feature length films

Well, mixers for feature work and mixers for eng work are pretty different. Most feature guys use something like a Cooper 208, or Sonosax, or Deva with the Zaxcom Mix12 controller. ENG guys will use something like the Sound Devices 442 or 552. I never really liked the older Shure mixers or the Wendt mixers, but that's just me. They were the standard for so long because that's all there was.

I was checking out some of those places, and I was seeing stuff like the cooper and sonosax...thanks for that input that helps in making a decision.

No problem. Before you purchase a used mixer, find out if it has been recently factory serviced to be put back into spec. If it hasn't, it's usually a good idea to send a used mixer you purchased back to the factory just to have it checked out.
