buying lenses from seller: how to verify they are legite?

So we plan to purchase some lenses from someone. It is a lot of money, and since i am purchasing from an individual and not a store i want to verify that the lenses are legitimate. The seller told me to call zeiss for them to check the serial numbers. However zeiss informed me they only could account for current model lenses not the old school zeiss lenses. Is there anywhere i can go to check the numbers on these lenses?
