I have a 501 head on Manfrotto "Mdeve" 755B legs (single legs, no spreaders, awesome ball leveler), which I bought at Leo's. I've got to say I love it so far. The head is nothing new, but the legs are extremely quick to set up, and really quite stable.
I've had them for about a month, and every time I've thought "I wonder if there's a way to do this", the solution presents itself.
I would think carefully about the 501 head. It is not a true fluid head. I got one for Christmas and although it is vastly superior to what I had before it has a little stick at the beginning of the pan that you can work around by dry running the pan first then it is ok until it sets idle for a while. Several owners on other forums report the same problem. The 503 is the next one up that people recommend but I haven't had the opportunity to use it and is mcuh more expensive. It seems like in the tripod/head department you get what you pay for.
Well, unfortunatly I'm on a budget, so I went with the 501. So far, it is tons better than what I kept borrowing from school, so I'm happy. But next time, now that I have something that is good, I will definatly go with something like the 503, or hopefully somehting better...
But thanks for you comments, I hope that the 501 will give me some good results.
I've used the 501 and 503. I bought the 503, there's no comparison. The 503 is fluid, and doesn't jerk around when you are shooting a wedding and you're moving in for the money shot and you shake as they kiss after the I dos and.... and...
I'm a little irritated with that head, sorry. ;D ;D ;D
There were 3 camera on the Ceremony, mine was one of the close ups. I could risk the movement. But, the 501 tends to stall for a sec from a rested position.
I know I will. I know the 501 isn't is smooth, et al. But I've never had the problems mentioned above -- the jerky starts, etc.. (That's happened with POS tripods from Best Buy, of course.)
