Buying a mic...

I'm looking to buy a shotgun mic for my DVX100. I've never had a shotgun mic before so I have been researching like crazy. I'm looking for one that is about $200, xlr, shorter (for use on a camera shockmount), also I want to be able to use it on a boom pole. The audio technica at-875 appealed to me, and my teacher said that the azdens are nice. Please help me out. Thanks!

There aren't many decent options around $200. You're not going to find many people here saying anything good about Azden products in general.

The AT875 ($200, 7") and Rode's NTG-1 ($250, 8.5") are pretty much the only mics that come to mind. There are sound samples of the 875 here and a sample of an NTG-2 (the NTG-1 with a battery power option) here.

The AT8035 is in that price range as well, but it's something like double the length of the 875.

What kind of stuff will you be shooting?

Are you working alone or with a crew?

Is $200 the absolute minimum budget?

What is your ultimate goal, to build a career or to have some fun?
