buying a mac

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking of buying a MAC, I just don't know what the best place is? apple.com? Or are there any other cheaper alternatives?

It's all the same price, you might save $5-50 bucks here and there, but pretty much all the same. If you're a student, you can save a little more that way too.

My suggestion: If you're going for an entry level G5.. pay for the upgraded gfx card.... the 6600LE is a waste.. get at least the 6600... you'll have problems with some 3d
and video apps with the LE.

the online apple store is also giving a free Nano with computer purchase for students..

SAVE YOURSELF THE SALES TAX!!!! I always buy from macmall or J&R because I don't Pay sales tax when they ship to Texas. If you buy from Apple.com, you will pay sales tax no matter where you live because I believe they have interests in every state.

I'm excited for you. I just worked on one of the new intels the other day- they're freaken amazing. I'd get the new macbook pro if I were you. Very fast. As far as price goes, everyone's right. They'll all be around the same price. I wouldn't recommend ebaying for one. Also, try to get the 3 year apple warranty program, you wont regret it. I had mine for a year, something happened to the display, and it would have cost 750 to fix it w/o the warranty. Goodluck!

If you're looking to save some money, I'd seriously look at the refurbs on Apple's site. I got a refurb Macbook Pro for around $1650 (price may even be a bit cheaper now) and it's very close to perfect...has none of the heat or whine issues people have experienced, looks great, and I even got extra RAM at no charge. Plus, the warranty is the same whether or not you buy new or refurb and is eligible for the same AppleCare warranty. Food for thought.

you know you are suposed to pay sales tax regardless if the store charges it at the time of purchase or not... :)

Yes, and sometimes I believe you can write the sales tax off of your taxes anyway. And I was told that some states are now asking on their tax forms whether or not you made any internet purchases (and whether or not you paid sales tax on those purchases). I don't think anyone here wants to promote tax evasion even though this is still a bit of a grey area.

How's that ?

If I'm not charged for it I'm not paying for it.

hey... all I know is that whenever I buy from MAcmall or J&R, or even B&H, they don't charge me sales tax when they ship out of their states... I don't know why, and I don't ask questions. As far as I know, that's how the law works.

Some states (the good ones) can give you waivers for sales tax on items purchased
in relation to production use as well.
