Re: Buying a G5 And FCP

Actually, the G5 has a great set up that holds two ata hard drives. The one that comes with the computer, which is usually 160GB and works as your bootdrive, which holds your OS and applications, and another bay that holds your DV and capture drive, which are typically 160-250GB. They are faster than external firewire drives, are cooled by the same fan that cools the rest of the computer, and don't take up any more space. Unfortunately, finding a good price on Apple stuff is hard. Everybodys prices are pretty much the same. The best deal is to buy the production suite for $1299, which includes FCP 4.5 HD, DVD Studio Pro 3, and Motion. Of course, SoundTrack, LiveType, Compressor, and Cinema tools are included too. As far as a deal, some dealers will at least throw in AppleCare warranty, or extra RAM, or maybe that extra hard drive. The dual processor G5 is definitely the way to go too. Have fun...

Re: Buying a G5 And FCP

I have to disagree about Small Dog. They have great marketing...projecting the kind of quirky, personal image that Ben and Jerry's used to have. But lots of Vermonters who have bought from them locally have been very disappointed in the poor service and lack of support after the sale. Their prices are the same as other legit dealers.

What Small Dog doesn't tend to offer but mail order places like MacConnection, MacZone, and MacMall do, is good bundles. For example, extra RAM, software, discounts on other products. Check 'em all out. (Of these, I like MacConnection best as a company.)

Most important: visit dealmac.com regularly, and see if something you like appears under "Systems."

Re: Buying a G5 And FCP

You can run Final Cut Express alright on those new G5 iMACs.  But get a gig of RAM in there.  And at least a 160gig HD.

Re: Buying a G5 And FCP

True. I ran Express on an iMac G4 for quite awhile, and the new FC Express is pretty awesome for $300.00. It is soooo similar to FCP, and with the HD, SoundTrack, and LiveType, its quite the deal.

Re: Buying a G5 And FCP

Good point, Guy. I've had good luck with Apple refurbs.

I'm trying to remember why I was planning to get FCE but went with FCP. I think it's that FCE doesn't support 24P. Just make sure you're getting what you need.

Re: Buying a G5 And FCP

i'm not sure how old you are but anyone with a student ID can walk into an apple store and get the student discount. myself and my ex on separate occasions have done this. she got a new ibook i got a new G5. we both graduated in 2001 but have our college ID's. feels a little dishonest and I was nervous as hell but it still worked. she had an easier time being a girl and all, plus she sort of 'marked' the apple employee who looked like he could care less.
