Buy or build

One of my friend is now hoping to get a budget computer, he can afford at most $600. We are now looking at this desktop and monitor:
HP Pavilion Slimline s3321p media center desktop $400
SAMSUNG 906BW Black 19in widescreen LCD monitor $180
Some other friends just advice him to build his own, but we are not that sure how to do that. So do any of you have any good list for that budget, he will just use the computer for general things, and if possible have fast speed. I think that monitor is a good choice, isn't it?

I use an HP Pavilion m7160n Media Center desktop for editing, and it works great. He will want a 2nd hard drive to put his captured footage on, however. This is true no matter what computer he uses.

Good luck!

BTW, the big problem with building your own is that most people don't take care to properly ground themselves from static electricity when building/upgrading/servicing their machines. They see no problems initially, but weeks or months later the system deteriorates and buggy problems begin to crop up.

I used to build my own. Now I buy off the shelf, pump up the RAM, and I'm good to go.

Building your own computer is more then assembling the parts. You need to do some reseach to ensure the parts you select will work together. And as mentioned before you need to have a static or emf wristband on and be in a clean enviornment. If you haven't built a computer and you have no access to someone who has, I'd highly suggest going off of the shelf with a turn key system.
