Hello, I am finally ready to purchase the DVX100A, but I live in Toronto. I am having a hard time finding a place here that "treats me right" enough for me to give them my $5000. I talked to Panasonic Canada, and (sorry Jared if this gets you in trouble you can delete this if you want) The person I talked to was a complete idiot (I think his name was David), it is like Panasonic Canada and Panasonic USA are 2 entirely different compaines.

I here alot of people having a good experience with EVS and Promax, if I order from them do I need to pay Duties? and if I do what is my warranty like?

Re: Buy DVX in Canada or US?

Hey,

I just went through the same experience and I ended up buying from Canada. Let me give you the low-down. First off, Panasonic Canada and Panasonic US are two totally different companies.

Buying in the US:
- The price is a lot more cheaper compared to Canada, you still have to pay Ontario taxes (15%), shipping which will probably cost at least $100 - from my research NY to NB (if you buy it in Canada it is a lot more cheaper), you have to pay UPS or Federal Express to be your broker to bring things through customs which will cost around $100, and you will not have to pay any duties (I called Customs Canada and that is what they told me). Also, if you buy your DVX100A as a business purchase you will get the money that it costs for taxes back. Keep in mind though that your insurance will be very expensive if you buy it for business. If you buy it for personal use it will be a lot cheaper (i.e insurance).

- Another point is I believe that you can get an extended warranty in the US, but you cannot do that in the Canada (you can only get 1 yr part and labour). Some good advice is to buy your camcorder with your credit card and you will get an extra 1 year to your warranty. One thing to keep in mind is that you will have to pay big bucks to get your camcorder shipped to where you bought it in the US to get it fixed or cleaned. Then, you will have to pay the same amount to get it back to Toronto.

Essentially, what I am saying is that it might look like a good deal to buy it from the states but when you look over the long term that`s when you see it is much more simpler and easier to buy from Canada.
If you have anymore questions I will be happy to answer them.

A few Panasonic dealers in Canada are:
- Instructor Aids in Halifax
- Sono Video in Montreal
- Cinequip in Toronto
- Vistek in Toronto
- Intercite in Montreal

I got my DVX100AP for $4650 which is a pretty good price. Call all these companies and ask for quotes and keep asking them if it is their best price. All of them hike up the price on everything so you can bring down the price by quite a bit, you would be surprised by how much, but make sure you get all your prices on quotes. It took me a few weeks to decide which dealer I planned to buy from. Also, tell them your very serious in making this purchase and you do not want to be treated like ****. Many times they never call you back so you have to keep hounding them until they understand that you really want to by the camcorder.

See ya for Now,
Youssef

I got a pretty good deal here in Montréal, you know here you have to pass by professional dealer to get the DVX100A, so you can have very good price with some accessories, as good as in the US with canadian warranty and services. It's up to you.

Two good places to buy in Montreal, Solotech and VGA Communication (ask for Pierre Laverdure)

No wonder we sell so many cameras in Canada.

Re: Buy DVX in Canada or US?

Dan Rickey.. go USA.. its a no brainer. You don't get dinged customs, save cash , and for the warranty you just send it back to the dealer to get serviced, not a big deal considering everything you gain.

Rush.. you would be amazed how Panasonic Canada runs its house up here... When I went to buy my DVX here, After talking directly to Panasonic Canada for hours and going to horrible shop after shop here on the west coast, I was so frustrated I ended up buying it from EVS as even the pre-sales service Cody provided blew me away

the Panasonic Canada product manager (David Craig) openly hates me (even at Nab he went around telling people what he thought of me heh heh) for openly criticizing the lack of professionalism of the Canadian dealers I have personally experienced; and that DVXuser.com and me are not more "controllable"

The only Canadian dealer I would actually buy from is DVshop.ca, but funny enough, they are not even "Authorized" from Pan Can.

So anyways, I would definitely pick a solid company like EVS, Profeel, BH, etc. in the US over Canada in a Heartbeat.  Not only to you get a 10 fold improvement in service, you save a whack of money and you get to talk to a much more competent Panasonic USA,  who is an exceptional team including Jan C, Steve Golub and Stuart English...

Re: Buy DVX in Canada or US?

I guess this message is to rush.

I was checking out some online retailer recently and I found this site www.bwayphoto.com. I just took a glance, but all their prices are well below the ones on evsonline.com. Do you match the prices of competitors?

bway photo: DVX100A = Only $3,159.00

evsonline: DVX100A = $3,479.00

Regarding the difference in Panasonic Canada and its US counterpart, Panasonic US is most likely a lot better than Canada's.

If you are going to buy from a US retailer buy it from close to where you live.
I have a question: Does anyone know how much it cost to ship something from Toronto to New York?

Re: Buy DVX in Canada or US?

Yue,

Broadway Photo has got to be on the top of the list for absolute crap dealers. This is a dealer to avoid at all costs. Do yourself a favor and check out the reseller ratings site mentioned above. I cannot tell you how many absolutely horrible stories I have heard from Bway photo suckers.

Re: Buy DVX in Canada or US?

EVS last I checked charged $50US for overnight Fedex to Canada, but they also sometimes ship for free depending on the weekly pricing. They also give a DVXuser member discount, so email rush at Rush@evsonline and ask for the best price, they will beat most of the legit prices, and Bway photo is dangerous.

Re: Buy DVX in Canada or US?

I met that geek David Craig at Nab; he is a red head guy with glasses and he probally got beat up alot in high school for being a geek. Im just happy I am American and get to harrass Jan C. boy She is great!!!! I also met some German and Japanese Panasonic people that seemed pretty good.

How is it that so many people still aren't hip to these Broadway Photo clowns? (Or maybe it's "clown," because I've never seen any evidence that it's not just one guy.)

Suffice it to say, these guys aren't reputable dealers.

I am surprised. You would think that This Jackass would kiss your ass, since you really could make or break thousands of customer's decisions.

I ended up buying my DVX100 threw my Dad's Friend in the US because of your suggestions, and it saved me a few Grand (Dad's friend works for Panasonic, so I would of anyways.) Thank you!

Speaking of which, My father is good friends with Andy Takani down in Jersey. Andy is the president of Panasonic Consumer in the US, and Panasonic is kissing his ass because he came up with the Ideas for life campaign that really turned Panasonic around.

He is actually being sent back to Japan Matsushita to take a higher position, and I will be sure to mention this Jerk to him for you.

They are really working hard to change Panasonic's reputation, and this David Craig guy seems like he is causing more trouble then good.

He does know of this website, and realizes how much money this site makes them, and saves them alot of money in support calls.

Thanks Jarred and Barry and John for making such a fantastic website. You three have taught me so much in the last 3 months.
