burning pumpkins

Hey, I'm working on a film, and the director is looking to have pumpkins that are carved have flames shoot up from inside, first it would be one then it would be about 5 around a character. almost like pyro you would see at a concert, just not as big. Any ideas on how to accomplish this?
 
Yes. A pumpkin may look harmless enough, but get it hot enough and suddenly you could have exploding fiery vegetables setting fire to your neighbourhood and causing tragic yet oddly hilarious deaths. You don't want to end up as one of those weird TV news stories...

Digital effects would certainly be a lot more controllable, presuming your post team can get them looking believable.
 
How big do the flames need to be? Put a tray of alcohol in the bottom and ignite it. They shouldn't explode as long as there's sections carved out to release pressure.
