Bullit

Saw Bullit last night for the first time. Great movie. I was amazed at the crisp, minimal dialogue. There's hardly any! And the audio in this movie is bare. No music during the famous car chase either and almost no foley sounds.

Re: Bullit

Yes, it's a great film, and a perfect vehicle for Steve McQueen. I enjoyed the minimalist approach as well. That chase scene is still a high water mark. I believe the guy who choreographed it (don't remember his name) went on to do the French Connection. The only way he could one-up himself was to have Gene Hackman chase an elevated train.

Re: Bullit

The Bullit car chase is awesome as hell. I don't really care for the one in French Connection, he's chasing a train. It's a cool concept, but simply not as cool.

Re: Bullit

I like when he almost runs the lady over in TFC.

Most car chases are wayyyy too long, IMHO (BOurne Supremacy anyone?) Not only does it make them unbelievable, but they get boring. But I never really noticed how long either of those two scenes were. They seem very organic as opposed to a mandatory, contrived mid-film thrill ride.

Re: Bullit

The car chase was very cool. But I must say that the best car chase I've ever seen was in Ronin. The second best has to be the one in To Live And Die In LA.

But getting back to Bullit. The film has given me some ideas for how to approach the audio on my project. I really liked the bare bones audio.

Re: Bullit

The chase in Jade (**** movie) was, of course, inspired by Bullitt.  The Jade one starts in North Beach in front of Mario's Bohemian and goes through every district on the east side of the City with zero continuity - but still rocks.

The Basic Instinct San Francisco chase is okay, but nothing compares to Bullitt.

I love that they actually show people getting hit in the Jade chase - far removed from the stuntmen always jumping out of the way at the last possible moment.  Hey did that lady have really hairy legs?!

We did a fun chase with a cable car in The Rock - though we cheated it using very long glass to suggest speed. That always bugged me, knowing how "real" the sequences were on Bullitt.

Funny thing was, we had another crew two blocks over shooting another cable car chase simultaneously for Eddie Murphy's Metro. The Rock was shot over real cable car tracks, while all the Metro footage was shot over tracks the crew painted directly onto the street. Not that anyone would ever be able to tell!

Now, all the stuff we did when I was on Nash Bridges was shot practical - no overcranked, processed fakery of any kind. That 'Cuda was fun to see jumped!

I also love the audio style in Bullitt, but sometimes its a little too tinny for my THX / DTS attuned ears!

Darwin is the masta blasta.

I agree. Steve McQueen is a legend. One of the true hollywood tough guys

Re: Bullit

The car chase in The Hidden is very cool. The director even had the Ferrari crash into a plate of glass carried across the street by two men--a gag joke. The Hidden had B movie tendencies.
