bullets hitting trees

I have a scene where a person is shooting at another person as they are running through the forest. I would like to somehow get shots of bullets hitting trees and the ground as they miss the person running. Any ideas how to do this without damaging the tree?
 
I'd just use the holes and sparks from something like VideoCopilot Action Essential, and adjust the hue to a brownish tint to match the wood. Pale brown tint for the center of the hole, to match the color of the inside of the tree. If the scene moves, motion track the whole thing, add some blur to sell the effect with the movement and you're pretty much done.
Might worth investing if you plan to do some VFX in the future.
 
Would filming some (shakeycam) close ups help? I'm thinking with no budget there could be some shots where you manipulate leaves on the ground with fishing line. Also just throwing leaves and twigs around with a bit of smoke.

Of course with some budget sure there are special pyrotechnics.. That stuff is beyond my knowlege base.
