Bullets hitting a person/ blood packs

I have alot of scenes in my movie that involve people being shot and and a blood hit I've researched and tried different things but nothing i've tried looks convincing nor good. Anyone have any solutions that have worked for you? I've heard of using Pecicide Sprayers, but that sounds stupid to me.

In a past life I did some special effects work (as an assistant) on large budget productions. It's a bit of a legal and logistic mess to "do it right" (at least here in California).

I think the pneumatic route has it's good side (few laws to break, decent effect).

Search for things like this:

I know it looks schlocky, but if you are in the realm of pesticide sprayers then that's about the best you're going to get without going to squibs. I can't stress enough how impressed i was with the safety measures the stunt coordinators and the SFX coordinator put in place when we used explosives. Multiple tests were done before production and everyone was comfortable before it started.

Score an "X" on the clothing at the site of the hit (from behind) so that you make sure to get a blow out when you trigger the effect.

This is from my memory of 16 years ago so maybe there's something wonderful and new out there that eclipses all this.

Definitely go the pneumatic route. I did special effects for a zombie horror film almost two years back and using a pesticide spray pump is excellent. Not to mention that in order to use squibs, you need to have a licensed pyrotechnics technician and making your own is highly dangerous.

akajack, in that video where the guy makes his own blood effect, and he gets shot, how is the blood squirting out? I didnt see him releasing that valve lol

Watch the quick cuts in that video and that the bottom half of the "victim" is not shown during the effect. There is another person off-screen triggering the effect, possibly even the guy acting as the "shooter" because you don't see them both on screen at the same time during the time the effect takes place.

Basically they are running the tube down his pant leg and it is triggered from ground level and then the shot is taken and the effect triggered. Then they cut, remove the tube, and the next shot shows him falling "dead" to the ground.

Depending on your budget, you can miniaturise the blood shooter and hide it right on your actor. My signature links to a project that does this.

A similar device is demonstrated in the extra content of "Band of Brothers."
