BULLET HITS practically digitally

Someone has suggested this method to me, I am wondering if it will work. I was told to film my talent who is going to be shot in a scene. With the bullet hits already cut out on their clothing. And then in commotion or photoshop erase the holes until the moment you need to reveal the hit. Has anyone tried it, will it work?

thanks

Never tried it but it doesn't sound very realistic to me. Think about the practical things like blood spraying out or whatever. What effect do you really want? A lot of times people get scared off from practical bullet wound effects because of the very real dangers of using squibs. I posted this link recently in my SFX sticky but here it is repeated. A safer way to simulate bullet hits on actors:

The blood mist could be added with a plug in. Such as ALAM DV where you could add the spray in post.

I've personally never seen digital bullet hits/blood spray that looks good, even in major films. It's always noticeable. The Departed (spray when he falls off the building) and 300 come to mind.

if you're going for a stylised look, e.g. 300 or Sin City, it could work fine. but if you want cold realism, I think you'll get much better results with practical effects, just like Hollywood uses - otherwise it will almost certainly look fake

Does anyone know how I can key in a huge puff of smoke and composite and turn red? I saw a you tube clip that looked amazing and the guy who did it said he keyed smoke/powder against black and painted it red. It looked real to me.

bullet in the head

How would one go about doing a bullet to the head? I have an actor wearing a black ski mask getting shot in the head. It hard to add a wound that can be seen. And i am not too fond of the digital blood hits. My idea is this. To shoot a manequin head with a firecracker in front of a green screen. And cloning a section of the head onto the actor in post. Will this work?
