Bulking up the camera? Anyone do it?

Help me out...

Does anyone add mass or weight to their camera to help handheld pans look like that of a bigger, weightier 35 or 16mm cameras?

Just curious

Yes. There are many different ways to do it. Some of them use a shaft extended from the bottom of the camera with weight at the bottom, which makes a sort of steady cam rig, I have also seen small gyroscopic stabilizers that attach to the bottom and are battery powered that aide in camera stabilization. Try doing a search for the gyroscopic stabilizers on this forum, because I remember having seen a post on them before.

I tried two different ideas. One was to bolt the camera onto a thick piece of steel (6 pounds) with holes in it and added two cheap handgrips underneath. Total cost 10 bucks. Second was literally rigging the DVX on top of a ten pound plate (from my gym) to add more mass and get rid of the jitters. Handheld from underneath. Both ideas worked very well and smoothed out most of the annoying dead-giveaway "I'm shooting with a 3 pound camera" look. Only down side is gets heavy real quick...but definately a better look.

Big cameras are shoulder mounted.. Consider a shoulder mount for your little camera.

Videosmith Mighty Wondercam - $179

Others will recommend DV Rig Pro, but it's more money, as is every other product I'm aware of.
Hope this helps.

What do you mean by "Big cameras are shoulder mounted" I think they were talking about weight for tripod panning and tilting. But that wondercam shoulder mount is a good unit. Used them many of times with the DVX.
