Hello Everyone, i am new to this forum and i hope i am posting in the correct sport :). Any way, i have read some of the post on here and you guys seem to be very noligable with these cameras.

I am a new owner, or soon to be new owner of a dvx 100b. I was wondering how good the built in mic on this camera is. I would really like to buy a shot gun mic and a lavalier mic. The shot gun mic i was looking into was the rhod videomic for $150. Is this a good mic and is it worth buying? The lavalier mic i wanted to purchase was the sennheiser mke 2 lavalier which is really expensive. Id like to get a lavalier mic that isnt quite as expensive but still decent quality.. Hopefully you understood all that but to make the question short, is the built in mic isnt good which shot gun mic should i purchase and which lavalier mic should i purchse.. Id like to have quality equiptment but not the best..

ALL THE FEEDBACK IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU!

For a $150 the Rode video mic is a great buy as long as you don't plan on filming jets and rock bands up close. A step up from that is a Rode NTG-1 which is also an excellent lower cost shotgun mic for around $220. It's more solid built then the video mic, specs out a little better and has xlr output instead of mini-plug.
I've got one of each and they're both great values. Can't go wrong with either.

Personally, the built in mic is a last resort if I'm counting on live audio.

The Rode mic just doesn't make sense for the DVX. It already has balanced audio input and manual control, but you're basically bypassing this in order to use a mini-plug mic! Spent a little more and get the Rode NTG-1 plus a $50 shockmount.

thanks a lot guys.. I will probably order that mic. Sorry, i dont meen to keep pushing answer out of you guys but what is your take on lavalier mics. Like i said above i didnt really want to spend 3 bills on a sennheiser mke 2.. Has anyone heard of the giant squid audio mics? I had heard both sides of them so i am right in the middle on them.. Once agian thanks sooo much for the info i REALLy do appreciate it..

Using a mini-jack on such a short cable run with a mic that supplies it's own phantom power really isn't an issue in my eyes, the fact that I can't find a mini-jack audio input on my dvx100b is......
I've only used the rode video mic on my dvc 30 which it worked great, but i stand corrected in saying it would be a fine mic for the dvx.
The NTG-1 is the way to go for the dvx.

I've only used lavalier mics in live PA installations but I would say that cheap ones = crap sound and crap reception. You gets what you pays for. Sennheiser might be expensive but the sound the produce is pretty good and the signal is top notch and very configurable (mind you lavaliers are generally pretty poor for live PA anyway but thats another story).
