Building up the Arsenal!

Just thought I would share. I have been cleaning out the closets, and storage facility and now I am putting in an arsenal/props room at my facility. I am no ISS, but it's a start

Oh, and I am building out a post production room.

Bengal Productions is stepping up in the world.

Sooo, so jealous. Here in Australia we can only dream about putting together an armoury like that. :-)

The other board I've been frequenting, has a lot of people with those... only they are real. Rednecks can be scary people. There was a Thompson for sale that I really wanted to play with :)

I was considering building up my own arsenal and renting the guns out...is this feasible? I wouldn't do blank firing - I am no firearms expert - but mainly airsoft (only the highest quality japanese brands), as well as rubber and resin stunt guns/holster stuffers. Maybe some model guns later on.

I've sort of become the defacto armorer for this group of local filmmakers, starting out with cheap squirt guns and cap guns painted black, moving on to cheapo chinese made airsoft guns, now I've got a tommy gun, a metal AK, 2 M1911s, a full metal blowback Beretta 92, and a full metal revolver, just bought an M16A2 and L85 from hollywoodpropsupply on ebay.... I also have been teaching myself motion graphics and compositing so I can provide the muzzle flashes, smoke, and ejecting shells in post.

I'm having a whole lot of fun with this...and the other week I had the crazy notion I could make this something of an actual business.

i was thinking the same thing.
i've got about 40 guns, 4 full swat costumes including door ram and concussion grenades, 20 pairs of tac boots in sizes 8 1/2-13 and enough tac gear to start my own army.
after i finish the flik i'm working on i don't know if i'll sell it or just be the guy like you who has it all. i imagine there are a lotta insurance issues, even with airsoft guns. i'm also looking into buying an ex-police crown vic. we'll see what happens.
one thing i do know is that the guns get trashed pretty easily. things like magazines get dropped and damaged and there like 50 bucks a piece on the nicer guns :(

Yeah my insurance is a bit expensive. And you have to have a good working relationship with the police, especially where you are going to store the props. And you have to be very patient and very knowledgeable. A director may come to you and ask you "what weapon is most suitable for this application". Just having the weaps is not enough. I am not trying to talk you out of it, but it can get intense and expensive, and very intimidating when you walk onto a set, and there is a "gun nut" who is ready to challenge your knowledge on what you are doing. (though I usually correct those issues right away, because they have a tendency to escalate, if not handled properly).

I separate my "guns" into catagories, depending on the shoot. One is "background/stunt". These are my cheaper guns. Then there is "supporting", more realistic and detailed. The final catagory is the "hero". These are a lifelike, even in an ECU shot.

Hey Doc, do you just get those from the local airsoft store, or do you buy them direct from the manufacturer? Ebay? What are your recommendations on the best brands?

Actually, all three options. I have arrangements with a couple of local shops, I scrounge CL and Ebay, and I also have a deal with a distributor. It pays to have been a bit of an airsoft player back in the day. I just renewed some of my old contacts, and had them help make new ones.

But my vendor list is pretty solid, now.

For brands, Echo 1 and Tokyo Marui are my go to's for rifles/SMGs, KWA/KWC for pistols. There are others, but for the realism, they seem to nail it the best. Another avenue to pursue are the replicas. Maruzen makes a few nice ones.

If you are really wanting to do this, we should talk. There a lot of things you need to know about what I do, and how I do it. Political BS is what I call it, but its necessary. Plus once I get a gun, I usually spend anywhere from 3-6 hours on it, safetying it, and detailing it for realism. Most of them still look too toyish out of the box. PM me.

PS: Looks like I'll have a couple of M60's (modern) here in about a week.
