building skateboard dolly...

ok i've been playing around with making my own dollies with rollerblade wheels and i've finally come to the conclusion that the skateboard wheels just make more sense.

the rollerblade wheels are contantly fighting the stress of the weight that tries to spread the wheels farther apart.

when you buy the quality rollerblade wheels and some decent nuts and bolts your right up to the price of what a decent pre-made set of skateboard dolly wheels/trucks would have cost you.

so here are the two i'm considering...

http://dvmoves.com/products/dolly/index.cfm

the dvmoves model is less expensive for the four wheel per truck version than the willy's widgets model.

the willy's model has its own frame of sorts that connects the two trucks on each end of the plywood.

i have the willy's widgets pvc connectors and they are made quite well but the dvmoves skateboard trucks look like they might be better made than the willy's widget one.

willy only shows you line drawings so its hard to compare some of the info.

i'm starting the next short july 25th so this week is my deadline for having all things i need to build done with.

so i basically need to order the skateboard wheel system i choose today or tomorrow and i need some last minute feedback.

We just built a dolly, and I know you can get by with as little as 8 wheels, because ours seems to work OK. More wheels would be nicer, but you can get by for less. I agree that skate wheels are better than roller blade wheels. For me, I would go with the Willys Widget wheels, because they seem to be more high quality, not to mention the ability to swivel. However, you get more wheels for the price with the DV moves dolly. So unless your getting the higher end willy's stuff, I would go with the DV moves....

well its almost a coin toss...

willy of willy's widgets is super to deal with and a very straightforward kind of guy in my dealings with him on the dolly track connectors, my only contact with the dvmoves people was to check out their shopping cart...

they clearly state on their website that the prices include shipping, yet when you add the product to your shopping cart it takes on almost $50 for shipping.

i sent them email and they said that they changed their policy and hadn't had a chance to update the site.

that kind of tweaked me a little bit but it also put them as being more expensive than the willy's widget product.

so i ordered the product from willy!

i always tend to do overkill so this time i took willy's advice and just got the single not double wheel setup.

there have been a handful of people who are super to deal with and seem to go way beyond the minimum...

rush at evs obviously, willy at willy's widgets, the people at nebtek (lcd's that use the panasonic batteries!) and of course jared with his great batteries and barry green with his contributions and book/dvd publishing!
