Hey everyone,
My business partner and I have reached a point six months after starting our own small production company where we're asking ourselves: What are we doing wrong? We've wanted to get work and stay busy, but it seems as if the jobs we've had so far have been far and few between.
As a company, we've managed to shoot a few big clients, but those were all through a middleman here and there (that we've mainly shot weddings with). And yes, we've unfortunately been shooting more weddings than we'd like to- the money is great, but the repetitiveness of the events are wearing down on us. My partner and I would love to be pulling in more corporate, commercial, and short documentary-style work, but have had little to no opportunity to find those types of clients.
Another great barrier that we're trying to get over is that we feel we're looked upon as very young- 23 years old, to be exact. While our portfolio shows the type of great work we're able to achieve (by our standards, at least), age still feels like a huge factor in all of this.
We don't want to necessarily steal work out from under others, but very much want to stay in this business because it's something we both love and enjoy.
Does anyone have any advice? If we should try and attend networking events more, then what should be done to lock in a great relationship and potentially secure work? Does cold-calling work at all, and if so, what is the best approach?
I understand that there are hundreds of books that look into these questions, but I wanted to see if anyone was willing to give some firsthand advice before we turn to these.
Thank you for your time!
