building a website... where do I start?

I need to put together a website that's more or less going to be my resume (It's probably mostly just going to be videography stuff for a while but my goal is to get work in actual films soon). My main problem is that I have no background in web design/programming. I want the site to be fairly understated so I'm pretty sure I'll be able to do it myself, I just have no idea where to start. Can someone recommend me a good website to teach me how to get started?

I built mine at www.wix.com. You can design and build your site there for free, using their templates. Makes it pretty easy to make a great looking site. I used it to build my site at www.tangledwebthemovie.com. Once your site is built, you can leave it on Wix for free. Or you can get yourself a domain name and host, and publish your Wix website there. Either way, it's a good way to play around with designing a site for free.

for anybody with no web programming skills or for anybody who doesn't want to be bothered with learning web programming skills i think the wordpress route is the best way to go. it's free, easy to update or manage and there's a ton of themes you can use to make the site look the way you want it. another route is to purchase a web template, but still requires some basic skills. ultimately clients will judge you on your demo reel and work so as long as your site looks "decent" you should be fine.

Part of my business is Web design, have since gone almost all Wordpress for my clients. Cheap, nice, easy and really great looking templates. It really cannot be beat.

I don't post here too often but I figured I'd chime in as I recently had a great experience building a website through the Cargo Collective Platform. It's not as flashy looking as a lot of wordpress sites, but I like it because it's literally all about the content. Anyway, it's around 66 bucks a year and they host everything (or you can embed vimeo videos), so you don't need to buy server space. The link to my site is www.tanneralmon.com and the link to Cargo is www.cargocollective.com

Good luck!

WordPress is great. If you end up installing WordPress on your site though, just make sure you keep up to date with security updates, or there's a possibility of your site getting hacked down the road.

This isn't a problem that is unique to WordPress. It applies equally to installing any sort of server side software (e.g. PHP, Perl, ASP, etc.) on your web site.
