Building a team of folks...

What is the best way to build a team of folks to work on projects? I am starting my own company soon but I wanted to have a small network of people that we can brain storm ideas and get some projects shot. I registered a profile on www.indieclub.com and only received one response about 8 months ago!

I could always put an ad in the paper explaining what I am looking for. I am basically looking for people that have talent and have a passion for doing what they do but like me are doing the work by themselves. I am hoping to build a small production team.

Any suggestions...

Re: Building a team of folks...

DVX100shooter, if you want people to work with you, then what you have to do is build a demo reel or something that shows people what you can do. If you got skills which I'm sure you probably do, people will want to work with you. When people see that you know your sh*t then they're going want to work with you. With that said, I would like to see some of your work.

Re: Building a team of folks...

I DO have a demo reel available and your right, people that have seen my work Do want to either want to work with me or want to see me succeed in my chosen career. I had been trying for sometime to compress my demo and have it playing on a website but I have not been able to get that going. I will have something up soon I hope! If you want me to mail it to you, I can do that as well.

When in need of help, throw a post on the job sites
mandy.com
maslowmedia.com
productionhub.com

If just wanting to colaberate with people, your local ITVA meetings are the best place to start.

I have a small group of 5 that I brainstorm with. We all have worked together before, which is how we all met. We just realized we work great together and can do some national stuff together so we went with it.
It's fun

... and thats what it's all about.

Re: Building a team of folks...

I am in the same boat as you...talented, but work alone....I live North of Boston and have wanted to work with others towards more short film work, music videos (rather than corporate), but still need to pay the bills!

Not sure where to start to get a group together without a paying project already in hand...most of the work I have done is for contacts with larger companies, and I haven't had to shop myself around....

There doesn't seem to be a place to find people collaborate with before you are ready to hire....

Anyone else with input?

Get excited about the future projects and start to envision the possibilities. If you're fired up others might also get fired up.

Write up a short page or two of what you envision and send it to willing folks, then book a local library room and have a get together and see who's interested in showing up. Set up a TV and play some DVD cuts to spark interest & dialogue.

Help others to also see themselves doing something in the future that is meaningful, etc... You're asking the same question everyone in history has asked when dreaming about what can be. You only need a handful of people like yourself, 3-6.

1. Start the vision
2. Have others help create that vision with you.
3. Create outrageously bold goals and then put small stepping stone goals before it i.e., we'll be bigger than Lucas & Speilberg but 1st we need to get this 10 minute short perfect that will be in a few film festivals.
4. Make an excellent 1/2 show for TV, if you get it sold great if not, so what, you're all on your way.
5. Keep upping the stakes and never look at failure as the end, it's only a set back.
6. Give praise openly and often. Appreciate each others talents ( even when you disagree) and share the wealth.

Do this along with the other advice listed and those that are needed will show up.

Re: Building a team of folks...

I'm doing the same, production company that is. I've found tons of friends that are going in it with me. I'd try local places.... or take a class at a nearby university to get connections. Talent is everywhere!

Re: Building a team of folks...

the problem i am also starting to see is that everyone is working on their own projects. Here I come wanting them to network with me to do bigger projects but I guess I just have to explain what it is I am trying to do and with more people dedicated to the project the better and possible more $$$ we could make.

Re: Building a team of folks...

DVX100shooter, I'm sure they all think that their project IS the better project. That may be the problem. They're probably all thinking like you. Let's build a team and make a movie, sure, but everyone want to be the director. Just doesn't work.
