Building a NAS for HD storage

Anyone have any experience building a NAS (Network Attached Storage) setup to store their HD footage? I got totally owned this weekend with not one, but TWO external hard drives failing. They were two most important ones out of my four... one Seagate and one WD.

Anyways, I'm looking to do a Gigabit Ethernet connection for uber fast connections, and I want to build the NAS soon. But should I build it myself or buy one? Suggestions? Recommendations?

Thanks!

A SAN (Shared Area Network) for video storage? For multiple systems? Or just some kind of protected RAID for a single system? What's your budget? Shared won't be cheap. protected not much either.

NAS is like a safe box for hard drives with Raid setup. I've been told that you can do it affordably. It sounds sweet to me to have a gigabit Ethernet connection. Yeah this would be for one system. IE: I plug my computer into the NAS and that's it. It's local.

Has anyone built an NAS of their own? If you have or if you've bought a system— what's the experience like?

Yeah the G-Safe looks pretty sweet. But I can't use eSata because I'm on a Macbook Pro, and when I order my iMac it won't have eSata either... so it's no different than the external hard drives that failed me before (sans RAID). But I'm intrigued. It looks like the fan system is nice and quiet, and I would like to run a RAID 1 setup.

Are these just the storage units? Do I have to buy the drives separately? If so, how is this cheaper than getting a NAS on NewEgg with gigabit Ethernet?

How's the experience with video editing? (I'm on Final Cut)
