Building a Computer....HELP!!

Thanks alot DJ. Okay, I think I'm about to start ordering. Looks like I'm going to go w/ this processor:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116212

I notice that they have this same processor for 16.00 more, and it's called the BTX version? What does BTX mean?

Any suggestions on compatible mobos for the processor I have selected? Sorry I'm asking everything in such a "Step by step" manner, but after I get the mobo and processor I'll have a good idea of everything else that I'm going to get. Tim.

BTX is referring to the heatsink. You're really restricted with this I guess, as there's only a couple of compatible mobos for this processor. Then you gotta make sure the case you get is BTX compatible. Stick with the one you have.

The processor you selected has a Socket Type LGA 775, so make sure your mobo is LGA 775 compatible.

Any of these should work:

You really don't need both. Having HT is a way to make a single core chip "kinda" act like a dual core. I guess you can look at it like that.

Yep. HyperThreading is kinda sorta like a software dual core...but not really. The CPU just pretends it's 2 CPUs.

Dual core...it really is 2 CPUs (for the most part. Some sharing still goes on, but nothing vitally important).

I'd go with the real hardware dual without the hyper threading.

Or spring for a 2 CPU Xeon board. I don't think anyone would mind if I skipped a few car payments...

I finally made my purchase yesterday from newegg. Athlon 64 3700+, 2gb sdram, 2 250gb 7,200rpm, 1 74gb 10,000rpm, 256mb 6800gt PCIx, 19" lcd monitor.
http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/WishList/WishShareShow.asp?ID=1621436&WishListTitle=AMD%20version

$2,283.83 w/ shipping and tax.

That's interesting; I just ordered and received:

Athlon64 X2 4200+ (dual core)

ASUS A8N-SLI Platinum Mobo

2 gigs PC3200

256MB 6600GT PCIx

2 250GB 7200 RPM SATA/150 HDD

$1150 from zipzoomfly.com; no tax; free two-day shipping.

Hey Dan, could you be more specific? I'm stupid :)

He's referring to a motherboard that accepts 2 cpus. Something like this:

But then it would mean getting two of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=GO&Range=1&bop=and&Range=1&description=xeon&InnerCata=343

It's probably overkill for your situation though.

We're like brothers...kinda.

David, does zipzoomfly have better prices?

Also, I see alot of people saying good things about the Athlon processor w/ Asus mobo-are they better than the intels?

Zipzoomfly and Newegg have about the same prices. ZZF is sometimes a few dollars more, but it's completely offset by having the free two-day shipping on pretty much everything.

I tend to order from both; usually if one has an item out of stock, the other will have it.

AMD makes good processers, and ASUS just kicks ass as a mobo builder. Better? That's hard to say. Athlons used to cost less, pound for pound, but I haven't compared lately, so I don't know if that's still the case.

I went with the A64 X2 because I wanted dual-core, and also because I wanted the option for an SLI array, and the A8N-SLI is currently the best board for it.

Yep. :) Oooooh, pretty.

Someday, I'll buy a lot at the government resale office which contains some quad processor systems. Now THAT'll be fun.

They're pretty expensive right now. You'd be better off with a pair of 250s. You can set up a RAID if you like, for faster throughput, and to make them act like a single drive, but that's probably not necessary if you're just going to be working with DV.
