Building a Computer....HELP!!

Okay guys....We are looking into a couple of things and one of the systems we are looking into is this one:

http://www.velocitymicro.com/wizard.php?iid=6&PHPSESSID=1f8c5d503ab6da5ec63f161830c69792

The unit shown for $1965.00 isn't the one I'm getting, I made the following changes:
Processor: Changed it from the 630 to a 640
Hard Drive 1: 400GB Hitachi 7200 rpm SATA/150, 8MB
Also, for Hard Drive 2: the same one.

With those changes, it comes out to $2370.00

Can someone please tell me the pros, cons, of this system. How upgradeable is this system? Any changes you would make? Thanks, Tim.

I'd go AMD, the 2 400gb HD you have are cool, but I'd add the 74gb 10,000 for your OS and other programs. Leave the other 2 for pics, docs, vids, whatever or setup raid.

I finally made my purchase yesterday from newegg. Athlon 64 3700+, 2gb sdram, 2 250gb 7,200rpm, 1 74gb 10,000rpm, 256mb 6800gt PCIx, 19" lcd monitor.

$2,283.83 w/ shipping and tax.

Do you not want to put it together yourself? You'll probably learn the most by assembling your own.

I do want to put it together myself, I'm not sure if my dad does. DJ: Is your setup pretty upgradeable? How good is the setup you ordered. I know that's a really vague question, but if you could spend a bit more, would you change anything on your list? Thanks, Tim.

Man, since I read that article FCP vs. Vegas, I have been curious what to do. And since the release of the new new iMac recently, Apple is letting me send back the 1 week old iMac for a full refund.

I am a big Mac (anti windows) fan but not impressed with FCP with what I have used it for (especially that price tag) and now I am in the market to get a new cpu/editing program! AHHHHH THE CHOICES!

If by upgradeable you mean ram, video cards, hard drives, etc. Then yes, all of that stuff is upgradeable. Of course you can only upgrade as much as your mobo can take (ram). But like if I wanted a better video card next year, then sure you can replace the old one, only if it's compatable w/ your mobo. Everything is pretty much upgradeable.

How good is the setup? FOR ME...it's great. Of course that might be different for someone else. For instance, I love gaming online (my reason for a $300 video card), but for someone else they may not need that. So now I have the storage for video, speed of a new processor, and nice graphics for my gaming. It's what I'VE been needing/wanting for awhile. Again I stress how this system is right for ME. What are your main uses going to be for?

If I had more money I wouldn't change anything. I would add to my setup of course, but I wouldn't change. I've spent plenty of time researching these products and know it's what suits me best.

THanks for the explanation DJ. I am mainly going to be using it for film productions, weddings, commercials, music videos etc.

DJ: We're going to order the case, the mobo, and the power supply first and order/assemble piece by piece. I'm looking at this case:

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16811133154

I'm looking at this processor, is this a dual processor?:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116197#DetailSpecs

Also, I'm looking on for the mobo listed on this page:

http://www.velocitymicro.com/wizard.php?iid=6&PHPSESSID=1f8c5d503ab6da5ec63f161830c69792

But can't seem to find it on newegg.

Before you go and take anymore advice from me, I'm not a pc expert or anything like that. I do know some basics though. Frizzle Fry is pretty knowledgeable in this area.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure that's not a dual core processor. This one is though: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116212

Don't really know anything about that mobo you listed. I do know though that Asus makes some of the best motherboards out there. Newegg does carry that mobo though: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813121286

Last thing, I'd wait and save my money to buy everything at once and save on shipping.

Thanks,
That's a good point about the shipping. Do you know if hyper threading support is important on a processor?

Right...that's just a Prescott P4.

And don't forget to buy the OS when you buy the rest, to keep the OEM price legit. :)

Hey Dan,
I'm not sure I get what you're saying about the prescott p4

Also, what is oem price?

I just got a computer that was built from scratch. It has a AMD 3800 Dual core X2 processor and a GIGABYTE Geforce 6800GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 Video Card. I highly recommend the processor because its rediculously fast...and works very well when running multiple applications. The graphics card is great too (playing fable the lost chapters on it is amazing) especially in conjunction with Viewsonic high res monitor.

He's saying that processor is NOT dual core. The core in that processor's name is Prescott. This dual core processor's name is Smithfield. They're just names.

Oh. Prescott is just one of their names for the newer P4 processors. It does hyperthreading, but it's not dual-core.

The OEM price on things...cheaper than retail, but are only sold "with a new computer"...or the parts to make one. Places aren't supposed to sell OEM parts by themselves. :) (OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer)

Yuppers.

Dan, I'm not sure if I even need both. Are you saying that if I have dual core, I don't really need hyper threading? Which would you recommend over the other if I had to give one up- dual core, or hyper threading?

I heard that hyper threading was really important, I also heard that dual core was very important. Should I just get the dual core and not worry about the hyper threading? Thanks dan, Tim.
