I'm trying to decide between building a PC or buying a 2010-2011 Mac pro. Idk which would be best. I do prefer adobe over final cut. I would still have my early 2008 macbook pro 4,1. I want the most bang for my buck and I need a rig that can render all the dslr footage I shoot. I do everything from :15 commercials to hour long weddings.

All advice is appreciated.

I have a 2008 MacPro maxed ram....3TB drives, updated video cards...ect... and a bunch of all video editing programs already loaded on it. I'd let it go for $800 if your interested. Its great with HD footage. I have been the only owner. Its not been used much for the last 2 years. I stopped using it as a primary editing system in 2011.

To answer your question...it all comes down to budget. You can get older macs for pretty cheap. You may be able to get more bang for your buck with PC though.

Better value for a PC, also i've had some issues with second hand/refurbed macs. Fan that keeps going crazy and occasional random crashes.. I do love working with media on macs however, if you're the same you may want to factor that in.

Why not build a PC you can run the MAC OSX on? A hackintosh? Google around, there is a list of approved motherboards its known to work with, this is what I would do if you don't have too much invested in terms of PC software.

Also oddly enough if you build your own MAC you can run Windows on it through Parallels and actually run both...

I am a mac and PC guy, I have both separately and always thought to build a hackintosh down the road to save $$$

I have both. In the sense that I have an (2x4) 8 core Apple built MacPro as well as a quad core Hackintosh and I am building a new box next month. Having run several home built Macs for almost six years there are ups and downs. If you are not a computer lover, both willing and able to do your own maintenance buy a built PC or an Apple built Mac. I have always had a backup computer for the edit system I was using and on a couple of scary days had to move the drives over. Yep my Hackintosh has edited many projects flawlessly but it has also farted a couple of times causing me to spend a couple of very long days troubleshooting and then doing the work to correct the problem. TonyMacx86 and a half dozen other sites will provide you with the tools you need to get in the Hackintosh world but they will give you the same caution.
Many folks have moved to Premiere Pro, I am now considering doing the same and as such will build a mean PC that I can run both operating systems on and not use Parallels but a native Win8 drive. If all else fails I will at least have the same edit system on both PC and Mac drives. As a Mac person for many years I am less and less impressed with their attitude and see them as becoming more and more of an appliance builder and less and less interested in the "visual arts".I do love their operating system however and wish they would just save us all the trouble and release it to run on whatever box we choose to buy. Let them build all the fancy home automation and blood and heart monitor devices into their iMacs so some feel they are getting something for the dollar value.
