Budget/starter ENG lens

Can somebody recommend a budget friendly ENG lens for use on an ENG body like HPX3100, 3000 or PMW500. Something that would get me started for making docs. I see there are lots of used lenses around mostly SD. Are SD lenses not good for HD?

Also does anybody know of a good source to get my self educated on ENG lenses?

Thx

I'm sure someone can weigh in with a more scientific answer, but when the news outlet that I work for converted to HD a few years back (Beta SX to XDCam 700's) We were all cautious about using our old SD wide angles, but some side by side tests showed little if any difference and we still use them daily. Obviously you need to make sure whatever lens you get can cover the sensor (both cameras had 2/3' CCD's), but I wouldn't get too hung up on on the "HD" labeling. Ideally I'd look for something on the wider side with a doubler to give you the most range. I've heard people say that it's not a true ENG lens without a doubler and I'd tend to agree (also they dont seem to bother with them on the low quality lenses so it can act as a good reference point when your shopping).

Okey I'll look for the ones with an extender. How hard did you look when you were comparing lenses?:) Did you do any resolution charts?

I have always used SD lenses when shooting with the 3700 and 3100 and never had any complaints or noticed any nasties!

An ideal ENG lens would be something like a Canon J9x5.2 IRS super wide angle broadcast lens with 2x extender for me.

I just did some searching and found a basic consensum that SD lenses aren't the best choice for HD shooting. Even people who shoot SD like to have HD lenses on their cameras. There is a difference in resolved detail and chromatic abberation is more present on SD lenses.

It's funy as I can't seem to find any good sources to read on ENG lenses.

What about a good all around HD lens? Is there such a thing?
