Budget Lighting.

hi,
as i have stated on earlier posts be very careful of these lights.

i purchased one to check if they were a viable alternative to the more expensive ones.

i was sorely disapointed. they are cheap and not only in the
monetary sense.

"YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR"

they came nowhere near the electrical safety standards of
australia.

low wattage cable, no earth, suspect connections.
these lights are made of metal, and the earth should terminate
to the housing, the earth line terminated at the switch.

if the active or neutral bridged to the housing the light and stand would have gone live.... and ruined everybodies day.

the ceramics also turned back to sand after several hours use
which could have caused the light to go live.

unless you are prepared to rewire them like i had to do to make them safe i wouldnt go near them.

there is a reason the original ones are expensive....they are built to last.

i have had 6 of the original lights for 20 years and they still work as good as the day i bought them.

if you decide to buy them.. please please get them checked by a sparky.

cheers,
ian

wow... Definetly staying away from these now.
Arghhh this is gonna be hard because ive only got 200 pounds ( UK) to spend on a lighting kit that will look half decent.

Only ideas?

THanks.

hi sway,

i know budget is everything and these lights are affordable

which probably makes them very popular.

if you are prepared to get them rewired they would be safer
just figure into you budget an electricians fee.

it is a simple job to strip out their wiring and put in your own
with a min 10 amp cable and industry standard earth termination.

i am a gaffer with a lot of lights and i have to get them tagged for safety every 3-6 months. which is why i was so shocked (so to speak) with the state of the wiring in these lights.

electricity is a harsh servant and is very unforgiving if anything goes wrong....

i make it a point to have every light i buy or hire checked out for safety.

cheers
ian

looks just like the blueline from imagewest.tv. Check into those and look up what people have said on here about them. They are apparantly not bad for the price but I have no idea about these red lights.

ok thanks for the help.

I've managed to scrap toghther 300 pounds ($500) is there anything you could recommend for around this price?>

Thanks :)
